Short Hair, Don't Care? These 5 Accessories Look Amazing on Supershort Hair

19/06/2019 - 05:15 PM

Hair accessories [1] are having a huge fashion moment. Since the debut of the padded Alice bands [2] at Prada Spring/Summer '19 and Ashley Williams's diamanté hair slides [3] from Summer '18, what you wear in your hair is one of Summer's biggest trends.

With the prairie aesthetic [4] continuing strong, our newfound fascination with childlike cuteness suggests that fashion is having a bit of an infantile obsession. There are tons of accessory styles trickling down from designer collections to the high street, and they all have one thing in common: size.

Whether you love the padded Alice bands, oversize hair clips, or massive pearl barrettes, our supersize approach to hair couture gives the illusion of a youthful smallness by contrast. Think about it; standard-size clips always look massive on our little heads when we are kids. While we opt for oversize accessories, we're channelling a bygone girlishness that supersexy Instagram often overshadows. Fashion is a world of extremes, and trends are never an island, they're a response.

Big hair clips look great on long hair, which balances out their novelty size. But if you have supershort [5] or Afro hair [6], then this popular trend might look a bit wonky on your cropped cut or tiny curls. Ahead, I've found five different hair accessories that were practically made for supershort hair so you can have fun with your look without compromising on style. The best part? They are all super affordable, and most of them can be made yourself.

Thin Ribbons in Primary Colours Remind Me of School Spirit

These cute, colourful ribbons make me think of repping your house colours on sports day.

I was walking through the haberdashery at Liberty [8] one afternoon and spotted these cute gingham ribbons — and of course I couldn't resist.

Above, I'm wearing three different ribbons cut at a length of one metre each. I layered three primary colours to give a cute painterly vibe without it looking too bulky on my tiny curls. I love the dimension of the three colours and how they matched my outfit, but you can also use one ribbon tied in the back with a bow if you want to keep it simple.

These gingham ribbons can be found right by the till at Liberty's haberdashery, and they go for about £2 per metre. They come in tons of different prints and styles so you can get super creative.

Curved Pearl Hair Slides Are Perfect For Supershort Hair

I love the pearl hair accessories that are taking over my Instagram feed, but oftentimes, they are either too big for my hair length or they're so long that they don't lie flat on my head. So when I stumbled upon Topshop's Curved Pearl Hair Slides [9] (£5), it was a match made in hairven.

This Delicate Metal Headband Got Me Feeling Like a Fairy Princess

I adore the padded Alice bands that all my friends have been rocking this year, but sadly, they are way too bulky for my head. So I dug up this supercute headband that I got about a year ago from Accessorize. The delicate gold twine decorated with beads and faux pearls is the perfect amount of luxe to dress up any outfit.

Accessorize no longer carries this style, but it has tons of equally cute, similar pieces on sale like the Accessorize Pearly Slide Alice Hair Band [10] (£6, originally £12).

Baby-Size Hair Clips Look Just as Cute as the Oversize Ones

Snap clips are so in this season, but most of the ones I've found on the high street are so massive that they just slide right out of my hair. That's where Claire's came to the rescue. Its Claire's Club range is made for little girls with tiny heads and is the perfect size for my micro ringlets.

Above, I'm wearing four of the Claire's Club Mini Snap Hair Clips [11] (£3) on either side of my hair.

A Twilly as a Hair Band Lies Perfectly on a Cropped Haircut

Hair bands are a blessing on a bad hair day. While I love the styles with a knotted front detail, most times the fabric is either too thick or the knot is way too big, and I end up fidgeting with it all day. I decided to make one myself with this luxe David Watson Blue Roses Twilly [12] (£75).

For making your own hair band, I wrapped the twilly around my head with the ends facing outward to the front of my face, then I twisted both ends around each other to make a knot in the centre of my forehead. Finally, I tucked the rest of the twilly ends behind my ear, securing them to the hair band with two bobby pins. Et voila!
