Popsugar Fashion Celebrity Fashion Billie Eilish on Why She Wears Baggy Clothes 17-Year-Old Billie Eilish Says Her Baggy Style Is a Choice to Avoid Being Sexualized 17 May 2019 by Chanel Vargas First Published: 16 May 2019 If you're a woman in today's world, chances are you know exactly what it's like to have others determine your worth based on your body image and it sucks. It's a universal experience. As someone who's struggled with my perception of my own body, I know that hearing others' opinions of your body can be a real mind game, even more so if you're frequently in the public eye. Billie Eilish seems to know it, too. In a recent Calvin Klein ad, the 17-year-old singer revealed that her baggy clothes and unique style are a deliberate choice to avoid being sexualized. "I never want the world to know everything about me," Billie said. "That's why I wear big, baggy clothes," Billie added. "Nobody can have an opinion because they haven't seen what's underneath. Nobody can be like, 'she's slim-thick,' 'she's not slim-thick,' 'she's got a flat *ss,' 'she's got a fat *ss.' No one can say any of that because they don't know." Billie's decision to dress in oversized clothing seems like an effective way to avoid the criticism of her body image overshadowing her actual musical talent. In several ways, however, her decision to dress in baggy clothes doesn't feel like much of a decision at all when the alternative is to have her body scrutinised by the public. While it's heartbreaking to know that such a young artist feels the need to hide her body completely to avoid being judged, Billie's admission in the "I Speak My Truth In #MyCalvins" ad has sparked overwhelming discussion and support among her fans. "When Billie Eilish said, "I wear baggy clothes so people don't have to know what's underneath, they can't judge," I felt that," wrote one fan on Twitter.
