Don't Call Melissa McCarthy's Clothing Line Plus-Size
We first fell in love with Melissa McCarthy for her ability to make us laugh so hard we end up in tears. But it's not just her humour that has us smitten: her sense of style has proven she's just as fierce on the red carpet as she is on the silver screen. And now the funnywoman is continuing her passion for fashion with a new venture, her own clothing line.
Dubbed Melissa McCarthy Seven7, the line will include a full range of must haves, all under £100. Where once Melissa struggled with designers declining to dress her for the Oscars, she is now able to rock her own pieces on the red carpet — and share her designs with the world. It has sizes ranging from 4 to 28 (US), so women of all shapes and sizes will be able to strut their stuff in the new collection.
But just because Melissa's line is available in a range of sizes that go up to a 28, don't default to calling it "plus-size." "Women come in all sizes," Melissa told Refinery29. "Seventy percent of women in the United States are a size 14 or above, and that's technically 'plus-size,' so you're taking your biggest category of people and telling them, 'You're not really worthy.' I find that very strange." She instead is working with retailers to stop segregating the plus section, allowing all women to shop together.
And although some celebrity lines can feel a bit insincere, Melissa's is an honest labor of love. "I went into clothing and textiles in college and moved here with [shoe designer] Brian Atwood," Melissa told Vogue. "I was going to finish at FIT, and he made me do stand-up on the second night." Instead of being an afterthought, fashion has always been part of the plan for Melissa.
The debut collection is an exciting mix of bold patterns and sleek easy-to-wear pieces — think leopard-print tuxedo trousers, tailored dresses, and even jeans. The collection will be available Sept. 1 in a handful of major US retailers and on Melissa's website. Scroll now for your first look at the new fashion line you'll soon be seeing everywhere.
