Runways inform big-picture trends, sure; but I turn to street style [1] when I want to know what to wear right now. Thankfully, as we head into the Fall 2019 Fashion Week calendar [2], we already have a sense of what those street style looks will be — so we can start planning our outfits. You can expect a resurgence of animal prints, Crayola-bright colours, and the comeback of the wide-leg jean spotted all over the streets at Copenhagen Fashion Week (which just preceded New York Fashion Week). Here, we've got a glimpse of the "dress code" being adopted by the most stylish showgoers [3], aka the women who really make the trends.

From quick styling tricks to fresh new silhouettes and a bright new palette, these are the eight trends setting the tone for Fashion Week street style and 2019 at large.

Head-to-Toe Brights

Brights are the new black. This season, you can expect to see outfits that were made for standing out in a range of highlighter hues. Think hot pink, orange, blue, and yellow — and you can forget small doses. Influencers and insiders are going all in with colourful separates that pack a big punch.

Plaid

On pants, jackets, skirts, and even shoes and bags, plaid is a go-to print among the style set. Reimagined in bright colour schemes and new silhouettes, this is anything but your typical tartans.

Pants That Aren't Jeans

The style set are in the mood to ditch their denim, opting for a more polished iteration like suit trousers and chinos. These bottoms easily elevate any outfit, but don't be afraid to pare down your suit with sneakers.

Animal Print

Animal-print dresses in leopard patterns have been a fashion staple for seasons; now, you can catch bold spots and stripes on almost anything. A blazer, a heel, a skirt, and pants are easy ways to incorporate a little of the wild trend into anything you wear.

Snake-Print Boots

Fashion has a new favourite boot that draws on the Western and '80s influences. You can expect to see well-heeled snake finishes spicing up outfits with texture and their unmistakable print.

Boiler Suits

The easiest fashion-forward outfit is the newest, utilitarian take on the jumpsuit. With sleeves and heavy fabric, these are easy to style for the colder weather.

Wide-Leg Jeans

If you do see fashion's insiders making the rounds in denim this season, you can bet they'll be wider legs. Easy flares and wide crops are giving "mom" jeans a run for their money.

Barettes

The unlikeliest addition to the Fashion Week wardrobe? We have to hand it to barrettes. Our childhood staple is making a comeback and looking entirely fresh for 2019.
