Halima Aden made her way back to the runway this week to wow us all in a custom burkini and hijab for the Sports Illustrated 2019 show as part of Miami Swim Week. The 21-year-old Somali-American model kicked-off the publication's event in a metallic ensemble courtesy of Cynthia Rowley, that read "Don't change yourself, change the game" down the sleeves.
Earlier this year, Halima made Sports Illustrated history [1] as the first woman to grace the magazine's pages in a hijab and burkini. She was also the first woman to wear a burkini in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant [2]. "Growing up in the United States, I never really felt represented, because I never could flip through a magazine and see a girl who was wearing a hijab," she said in a video, reflecting on her accomplishments [3].
Halima's taste in swimwear isn't the only thing worth applauding — her sophisticated street style [4] is just as impressive. Keep reading to see more photos from her night on the runway, and then catch up on her other groundbreaking moments [5] in fashion.
