Holly Fulton Presses Mute For Autumn/Winter 2014
Holly Fulton joined the ranks of London Fashion Week designers who grew up this season, putting a more grown-up, ladylike spin on her signature look. The elements we know and love were still there, from bold art-deco-inspired prints to tongue-in-cheek appliqué motifs, but instead of being rendered in bright shades, they came in muted tones of sky blue, beige, grey, and mauve.
The show made a knowing nod to the working woman, with pieces emblazoned with power heels, gloves and briefcases. A houndstooth dress featured a huge hand holding a boxy handbag, the wrist piled with bangles and bracelets, and models wore high heels with brogue details. The art deco pieces used arrows, butterfly-like blooms, and exclamation marks to build up decorative details, which looked particularly strong on a beige wool coat and a slinky party dress. None of Fulton's sense of fun disappeared in this more muted collection, and it should please die-hard fans, but maybe the softer colours and more wearable pieces will help her to earn a few more mature customers along the way?
