I Gave the Bucket Hat Trend a Try and, I've Gotta Say, I'm Sort of a Fan Now

24/10/2018 - 10:01 PM

I'm a sucker for trying out new trends. Biker shorts [1]? Tried it. Dealing with my fear of mom jeans [2]? Done it. Pretending to be royalty and dressing up as Kate Middleton [3] for a day? Yep, been there! So, when I saw that bucket hats were suddenly back [4], you better believe I started dreaming up ways to incorporate this retro piece into my wardrobe.

Funny story: I actually wore my Golf Le Fleur x Converse bucket hat [5] earlier this year, and all my friends poked fun at me saying things like, "Off to holiday in the '90s, I see?" Ironically, everyone now wants to know how to give it a try after seeing it on the Spring 2019 runways [6] at shows like Anna Sui and 3.1 Phillip Lim.

I ended up choosing three different styles of bucket hats — including a vintage Gucci hat from What Goes Around Comes Around [7] ($650), my Golf Le Fleur sherpa hat [8], and a super cute plaid style from Bybabba [9] ($40) — to really push myself out of my comfort zone and have fun with it.

My overall verdict is that the trend shockingly easy to style. Did I take myself seriously in some of these outfits? Nah. But, more importantly, did I have fun and would I wear them again? Hell yeahhh. Read on to see three easy ways I styled my bucket hats.

Look 1 — Mixing Prints

The inspiration: I've always been a little wary of mixing prints, but this adorable plaid hat inspired me to give it a try.

The outfit: I wore this red plaid bucket hat from Bybabba [11] ($40) with a Splendid striped turtleneck, 7 For Mankind jeans, and New Balance dad sneakers.

How I felt: I was shocked by how easy it was to get behind this outfit. It's an simple look to recreate in the Fall and I loved the nostalgic feel of pairing the bucket hat with both dad sneakers and mom jeans.

Look 2 — Logo Mania

The inspiration: In case you were wondering, logo mania is alive and well. I've seen plenty of bloggers give the vintage bucket hat trend a try, so I thought this would be an fun one to test.

The outfit: I styled a vintage Gucci hat from What Goes Around Comes Around [12] ($650) with a camo jacket, black Frame jeans, and my red suede Stuart Weitzman Clinger Boots [13] ($460, originally $575) to match the red stripe in my hat.

How I felt: I wouldn't normally opt for a super hypey street-style look, but I actually didn't mind it. Styling my outfit with the logo-covered hat made it feel more trendy. While I'm not sure that I would wear this outfit on the regular basis, I could see myself wearing the look to a concert.

Look 3 — Cosy Everyday Look

The inspiration: I was going for an everyday look that I could wear either at brunch with my girlfriends or to work on a casual Friday.

The outfit: I wore my Golf Le Fleur x Converse sherpa bucket hat with a simple grey tee, L'Agence jeans, a Vans suede jacket, and Chanel kitten heels.

How I felt: You can usually find me in a pair of jeans and a tee throughout the year, give or take a jacket, so this outfit wasn't that much of a stretch for me. The suede jacket and sherpa bucket hat was a effortless way to give my look a Fall spin. The addition of my kitten heels made my outfit a little less casual.
