Isabel Marant's Runway Will Make You Feel Like a Modern-Day Disco Queen
Isabel Marant cornered the market on Parisian cool when she gave us the wedge sneakers coveted by fashion girls everywhere in 2012. Autumn is the 2017 evolution of that branding — part disco queen, all parts chic French girl, with frills in all the right places, trousers with the right drape, and boots and denim, covered in sparkle, as worn on the runway by Gigi Hadid.
David Bowie's "Golden Years" set the tone — models looked more like '70s rock stars, or groupies, in jackets with oversize shearling-covered lapels, ruffled dresses, touches of velvet, and flared trousers. Kate Hudson — or maybe it was Penny Lane — flashed in our minds. It's the stuff you'd see her effortlessly mixing and wish you could do the same. Well, here you can. You'll be inspired to play with both pieces that feel as if they were plucked from a cool vintage store and the bolder, forward-facing fashion.
While the collection kicks off with the feminine, folkloric wear and ends in a glamazon finale, the middle belongs to neither camp entirely. Drawing more prominently from the '80s, power suiting makes its mark with strong shoulders, wide belts to cinch waists, and reimagined pinstripes before the lineup goes almost full Dynasty mode and gives way to leopard-print and glittered leggings. Throughout, Marant sprinkle her magic — the ruching on a dress, the designer's signature quilting, and what we suspect will be the next shoe craze, popularised by the French cool girl: knee-high boots in velvet and leather to wear with everything you see coming down the runway.
