J.W. Anderson Gave the French Riviera a Dalston Update
J.W. Anderson has had quite a year since he presented his last Spring collection in 2013. The British designer got a major investment by French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, which also placed him at the helm of fashion house Loewe. But with the money usually also come the expectations. Did that mean that J.W. Anderson would go commercial this season?
To start with, you could definitely feel the French influence, as models took to the catwalk in Breton stripes. But this wasn't boring Riviera chic. The designer gave the look a Dalston update (he just moved into a new office space in the hip London area): brass buttons on sailor trousers were placed on the back, and towelling skirts looked way better than towels wrapped around damp beach bodies. Then there was all the leather, in the form of big, floppy sun hats, layered over knit dresses or fashioned into a collar on shirts. A nod to his engagement at Loewe, which is known for its luxurious leather goods? Notably, there were also a lot of separates, including elegant skirts and draped crop tops. In short, a collection that was French chic with a very classic and cool Anderson twist.
