The kaftan is a great Summer cover up. It has become an essential part of beachwear, but what does the word actually mean?
The item originated in Eastern Europe where it was defined as a long tunic with full sleeves and a sash reaching down to the ankles;. It was mainly worn by men originally, but has since been adapted for women. It's usually made from a very lightweight fabric such as muslin or cotton.
The garment also has origins in West Africa where a pull over dress was sometimes referred to as a 'boubou'. Will you be wearing a kaftan this Summer?
