Kate Spade New York Fashion Week Show Spring 2020

The Models at Kate Spade Were Chic Plant Moms From Every Generation

Kate Spade New York Fashion Week Show Spring 2020

I don't know about all the other show attendees, but after I left Kate Spade New York's Spring 2020 show at Elizabeth Street Garden, all I wanted to do was dress up in a colourful crochet dress and plant seeds in my backyard. Wishful thinking, since I live in a high-rise apartment building off the highway, am I right? But there's no doubt about it: when Spring comes, I'm going to channel the vibes these women were sending from the runway, which was essentially just a pathway through the grass.

Show notes referred to the new collection as a "city safari" — they came scrawled on a biodegradable card with wildflower seeds, so guests can bury them in the ground and wait for flowers to sprout. The clothes were colourful as always, with crochet details and splashy floral patterns, but they were also for women of all ages and for every shape and size. Matching sleeveless crochet dresses and bishop-sleeved blouses looked incredible on petite influencers Molly and Reese Blutstein, and Younger actress Debi Mazar and her daughter were elegant in long romantic dresses. Yes, the Kate Spade lineup was diverse and happened to be peppered with famous faces, but their bright looks were easily accessible.

My favourite detail here just might be the accessories. I'm already eyeing the mini crochet bags, which were carried alongside oversize totes and even paired up with a fun new elephant shaped crossbody (his name is Tiny). But most people will write home about the flatforms. Some were reminiscent of the '70s — wooden heels with groovy bouquet prints — and others had tall soles with stripes; the ultimate holiday shoe. Read on to digest what may be the happiest show of New York Fashion Week, and then go get yourself a plant (or water the ones you already have), because greenery is where it's at.
