Everyone's Invited to Molly Goddard's Tulle Tea Party
Molly Goddard presented her Autumn/Winter 2017 collection on Saturday and continued to diversify her brand. It was her second big runway show (after starting with presentations) and the biggest yet, in a huge space dressed ready for a dinner party.
It's easy to see why street style stars and celebs like Rihanna, Agyness Deyn, and Fearne Cotton are a sucker for this label. Goddard's voluminous pieces are the perfect combination of girlie and edgy — pretty and nostalgic, but notoriously difficult to pull off. The airy tulle smock dresses that made the designer famous — like grown-up dolls' dresses — were still a key part of the collection, but Goddard proved that she has plenty of other tricks up her sleeve, including some more wearable, slimline shapes. Models took their seats at the catwalk dinner party dressed in everything from richly-gathered day dresses in haberdashery-inspired florals to shiny silver trousers with gathered seams that poked out under net frocks. Pin-tucked swing coats, striped knits, slim trousers, boxy cropped jackets, and a memorable pair of coral pink wide-leg trousers added variety to the mix. Still, we found ourselves most drawn to the looks that Goddard does so well — a voluminous green tulle evening dress strewn with flowers, tie-shoulder pinafore dresses, and hot pink and vivid blue tiered net dresses.
