How Do We Become a Member of the Temperley Tribe?
Just when you think Alice Temperley can't possibly top the previous season when it comes to detail, she pulls something like this out of the hat. For Spring/Summer 2017, she is taking us to the best dressed party beach on Earth and introducing us to the Temperley Tribe.
There are some things you know you'll see at a Temperley show. There will be prints, embroidery, bright colours on black or white bases, cropped trousers, scarves, and dozens of feminine dresses you will want to take home immediately. Over the years, the designer has moved away from the art-deco-inspired prints that made her name towards more exotic combinations, whimsical embroidery, and lighter fabrications. This season we saw how well that can work. If last season's girls were world-weary pirates and sirens, this year's are seasoned travellers of a different kind, those who who do a little less pillaging and a bit more partying on the beach, shopping in the souks of Morocco, and hanging out in the VIP lounge at festivals.
They do this in rainbow sequinned jumpsuits, floaty embroidered frocks, sheer gowns covered in sparkles, embroidered culottes, and tiered maxi skirts. When the sun sets, they wrap up in an embroidered jacket or slip into a kaftan and waistcoat combo. Colours are pure sunshine; yellow, orange, purple, in bold and pastel tones. As another London Fashion Week designer, Matthew Williamson, refocuses his attention towards beachwear and home furnishings, Alice Temperley is primed to take his place as the go-to designer for the ubercool Ibiza crowd. After all, what party girl can say no to a sheer, glittering pastel crop top and maxi skirt combo?
