Trompe L'oeil Definition

Style Glossary: Trompe L'oeil

Trompe l'oeil is a phrase I'm increasingly hearing, but it's a bit of a confusing one. It was originally used as an artistic term and literally translates from the French to mean "fools the eye". As painting this meant photo-like drawings with proper sizing and a great amount of detail, in fashion terms it refers to something which appears to have detailing, such as a belt or a tie, but is actually just drawn on.

Sonia Rykiel is a good example of this style as she often uses quirky detailing for a trompe l'oeil effect, like with this cardigan (£183).
