What to Wear When It's Hot and Rainy

What to Actually Wear When It's Raining and Sweltering Outside

This summer has been quite the season. There's been a historic win for the Lionesses at the Euros, the Prime Minister resigned, and the UK has had record-breaking temperatures. Downpours and storms are now expected this week, but the muggy temperatures are here to stay, which can wreak havoc on your wardrobe.

I once got caught in a downpour wearing wide-leg trousers and sandals on a sticky day in the city and barely lived to tell the tale. So, live and learn. Now, I've made it a personal mission to track down some outfits that are heatwave and rainy-day friendly. Soak up the inspiration, weatherproof your wardrobe, pack a fan (or an umbrella) — and stay stylish!

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Athleisure

Do opt for cool trackies and trainers. Most tracksuits have moisture-wicking materials that'll help keep you dry. Plus, you can throw on a lighter top, like a crop top or tank, to balance it out and stay cool.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Cropped Denim

It goes without saying a cropped pair of trousers is likely your best bet in this awkward heat. Breezy enough that you can show a little skin around your leg, but you avoid hemlines dripping in puddles. Slip into a pair of trusty trainers, and you're good to weather the weather.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Lightweight Jacket

Add a little coverage with a bomber jacket, denim number, or even linen blazer. Pop it over your favourite summer dress so that you are protected from the elements and toughen up a feminine print with boxy cuts. Slip the jacket off when the sun shines. Voila!

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Midi Dress

It's been the length du jour for the last few seasons, and in the rain, the midi dress really comes into its own. Lying just below the knee, the calf-length dress is ideal for almost any kind of footwear. Add boots, trainers, or even chunky heels for a weatherproof wardrobe. Plus, a loose-fit smock will keep you cool in the heat.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Culottes

The wide-leg cropped trousers are Marmite, we know. But honestly, comfort is key in this weather. If you like the relaxed cut that has been super popular this summer, then it's worth investing in a pair of culottes. No soggy hemlines and still comfortable. Try tucking in a simple tee for a chic off-duty look.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Stomper Boots

If you think your chunky boots should only be brought out during autumn and winter, you might want to think again. Offset a twee pattern with a stomper boot for the ultimate edgy look. Try a floral minidress with slip-on ankle boots, and give the look a practical spin.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Plant-Based Fabrics

On a steamy day that's set to be a heatwave, ditch anything that's made from polyester (also known as plastic), because it doesn't let your skin breathe. Instead, try cool plant-based fabrics like cotton, linen, rayon, or denim that allow sweat to evaporate quickly rather than keeping it trapped on your skin.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Tote Bag

When it comes to accessories, bigger is better. Just think of all you need to take out with you: an umbrella, a fan, sunglasses, a hat . . . the list is endless. Fortunately, big bags are in this season, so look for oversized straw totes that go with any outfit.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Bucket Hats

Bucket hats might be divisive, but they're practical, too. Add a printed hat to a minimal outfit for protection and style points.

Hot Rainy Day Outfits: Avoid White

Breezy white fabrics are our favourite when it's hot and sticky, but they don't look quite as chic when they're soaked and see-through. Best to hang these up on days you expect a downpour or a heatwave.
