5 Jacket Trends That You're Already Dreaming About for Autumn
Autumn weather might be a bit unpredictable, but the good news is that we get to be creative with our cold weather outfit layering. The crisp mornings and cooler nights give us a great opportunity to find the perfect jacket for keeping us cosy during the autumn season. For inspiration on which trends are worth the investment, we did some research for you into the 2020 outerwear trends that you'll be adding to your wishlist. From the global fashion weeks, to what you're really searching online, the pieces we're loving from Instagram's style pros, and the new season jackets that are bubbling up across our favourite designer and high street stores — keep reading for what you'll be wearing on essential journeys this autumn.
This season, you'll find yourself lusting after five statement jacket styles: classic denim pieces, puff-sleeve coats, shackets, faux leather outerwear, and oversized puffers. London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2020 gave us a first look at the outerwear silhouettes that we'll be wearing during the transitional and chilly months. The classic jeans jacket was revived on the runways at Ashley Williams, Halpern, and Marques'Almeida A/W2020. Williams introduced us to the puff sleeve denim jacket for autumn, while Halpern gave a structured, corporate update to the usually relaxed fit look, and Marques'Almeida's version meant frayed hemlines and lightwash colours.
Puff-sleeve coats were expected for autumn since many fashion lovers have been watching this trend steadily take over the sartorial zeitgeist since 2018 — at LFW A/W2020, JW Anderson, Victoria Beckham, and Simone Rocha did it justice. Faux leather is also a trend that's been steadily bubbling up since 2019, and we loved the glossy, Matrix-inspired statement leather coats from Erdem; the sharp, structured longline jackets from Richard Quinn; and Rejina Pyo's smart leather blazers.
If blazers are a bit on the corporate side for you, then check out the shacket (which is a portmanteau of shirt and jacket). Although the men's utility shirt didn't feature heavily at the big four fashion weeks, Google trends reveals that shoppers are recently searching "leather shacket" at over 450 percent. The oversized overshirt is the perfect transitional layering piece in a relaxed fit, with our favourite designs coming from the high street — most notably Monki, & Other Stories, and Arket. Oversized puffer jackets, on the other hand, are much like a camel trench coat because it's an essential addition for the ultimate capsule wardrobe.
Ahead, some of our favourite street style pros show us how to wear these five autumn jacket trends with confidence, and where to find your own at every price point.
