7 Handbag Trends That Will Be Everywhere Next Season

20/02/2020 - 09:51 PM

Though Paris Fashion Week is just kicking off, Fashion Month is giving us some seriously stylish handbag trends [1] to fawn over thus far, from New York to London and Milan. Since we just can't help ourselves when it comes to deciphering new trends [2], we're here to give you a preview of what's to come later in 2020 for the Autumn and Winter season in the world of bags.

First up? The return of a classic shape that we haven't seen in a while, the double top-handle tote. Appearing sleek and minimal in most cases with a few heritage-inspired iterations popping up, too, this trend is our top pick for your new work bag come Autumn. Another major movement? Chains! Adding an edgy touch to carryalls, crossbodies, totes, and beyond, heavy-metal links are proving to be a huge trend across the board, showing up on just about everything from shoes to clothing and jewellery. Another common theme we're seeing for the cool-weather season is vintage-inspired fashion, particularly with a sophisticated '60s twist (think Jacqueline Kennedy). For bags, this is translating to ladylike pocketbooks like your nan owns, from beaded iterations to supple leather and satin.

With tons of fashion shows still ahead of us for the Autumn/Winter 2020 season, many more trends are guaranteed to emerge. Until then, scroll on for the four topping our list so far, and keep checking back as we continue to bring you more runway highlights from the Paris collections.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: Chain Accents

From oversized links at JW Anderson and N°21 to chain straps at Ulla Johnson, Michael Kors Collection, and Adeam, Autumn is all about the chain reaction. Lending an edgy feel to every style of bag from minis to totes, there's no wrong way to rock a chain bag in 2020.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: The Double Top-Handle Tote

We love a timeless handbag and the double top-handle tote is seeing a triumphant return for Autumn and Winter. From heritage-inspired styles at Gucci and Louis Vuitton to supersleek and minimal versions at Khaite and Oscar de la Renta, this handbag trend is perfect to pair with workwear Monday through Friday – it's so sophisticated in every fabrication from leather to suede and faux-croc.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: The Pocketbook

With a nostalgic feel reminiscent of the '50s and '60s, vintage-inspired bags are proving to be a standout look on designer runways from New York to Milan. Whether it's a structured frame bag with a dangling strap, two-strap satin mini, or beaded satchel, the common thread between these bags is ladylike and prim.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: Quilting

We'll forever associate quilting with Chanel, and thanks to the French house's latest buzzy bag — the 19 Flap Bag [11], which debuted for Autumn 2019 and features maxi diamond quilting — the stitched effect has taken off in myriad designer collections, from Alexander McQueen to Valentino and A.W.A.K.E. Mode. Whether it's a structured shoulder bag, soft fold-over clutch, or oversize carryall, it's our prediction that the quilted look will take off in 2020 in the way Bottega Veneta's woven leather bags did in 2019.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: The Saddlebag

Equestrian influences made their mark on designer runways for Autumn 2020 with saddlebags proving to be a key accessory when channelling the look. Whether you appreciate Western-inspired details like at Celine and Max Mara or prefer a more modern and sleek take à la Hermes and Etro, we're betting on this crossbody style as a ubiquitous silhouette next season.

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: The Overnight Bag

Extra-large bags are a runway favourite, but this season, we're noticing a shift towards the practical overnight bag in a range of shapes. From massive top-handle totes to extra-wide weekenders and structured silhouettes akin to luggage, designers from Burberry to Max Mara and Jil Sander are making the case for the two-day getaway (and/or making it chicer to lug around everything but the kitchen sink).

Autumn Bag Trends 2020: Two-Toned

At once subtle and statement-making, two-toned pieces [12] started bubbling up in designer collections for Spring 2020 and for Autumn, the trend is proving irresistible in bag form. Though we spotted a few colourful versions, neutral blocking is the ultrachic version we're here for that's versatile to boot. From Loewe's drawstring bucket to Longchamp's structured top handle and Stella McCartney's sporty satchel, any one of these muted bags would pair effortlessly with myriad outfits in your wardrobe.
