Here's What the Fashion World Is Shopping For Fall, With No Fashion Week in Sight

24/08/2020 - 08:43 PM

This fall looks a lot different for the fashion world. With runways cancelled or shows reimagined [1] on a way smaller scale, street style stars [2] won't be parading for cameras in major cities, showing off the new It items they procured during the summer months. The editors, stylists, and influencers we know are adjusting to a digital atmosphere [3] where we are digesting new trends online — in part due to what we see as we scroll through our Instagram feeds. Even so, the people who make up the fashion industry do not lack in the personal style department, and they never will. That's why we connected with them to see what their shopping carts look like right now.

Naturally, we're all thinking about transitioning to a fall climate [4], and what that looks like working from home [5] is different for everyone. While most of us are certainly seeking comfort, the excitement that comes with trying a new trend can't be denied, and so many of us are planning to experiment. Kerry Pieri, Fashion Director at Harper's Bazaar, normally spends these few weeks searching for heels, but now she's trying a lower platform instead. Freelance writer Natasha Marsh usually reaches for dark denim in the fall, but is quarantining in LA, and the change of scenery has inspired her to test out a lighter wash. Below, you'll find even more great ideas for fall shopping from our friends in fashion, but also the encouragement to stay in tune with your personal style [6] through these changing times.

Sarah Wasilak, POPSUGAR Fashion Editor

"My best friend passed on this old Donna Karan Collection hand-me-down set. It's a royal cashmere tube top and cardigan, and I just can't take it off. I love the versatility that comes with something sleeved that you can layer when it's cool, but work as a second styling piece in the summer. I think knotting the sweater over my shoulder brings a whole new look to the tube top, so I'm down to wear it both ways. Plus, it's ridiculously soft. I keep finding myself searching for looks like these right now."

Sarah's Pick

Zara Structured Knit Jacket [8] ($36) and Zara Textured Knit Top [9] ($26)

Nikita Charuza, POPSUGAR Fashion Editor

"This fall, the one item I plan on buying is a monochrome sweat short and sweatshirt set by Pangaia x Just. While in the past I would be swinging for a new pair of boots, this year I'm taking it back to basics with cosy items I can wear both at home and while running errands. I particularly love that this set is also eco-friendly!"

Nikita's Pick

PANGAIA x JUST Organic Cotton Hoodie [10] ($150) and PANGAIA x JUST Organic Cotton Shorts [11] ($80)

Tyla-Lauren Gilmore, Digital Content Creator

"My go-to item for fall is a cropped blazer. I have a massive blazer collection, so I'm always looking for new blazers in different styles. I love that you can style it so many different ways and it can transition from a summer piece to a fall piece."

Tyla-Lauren's Pick

Materiel Cropped blazer [12] ($136, originally $680)

Claire Most, Product Manager

"I am obsessed with sweater vests at the moment. It's a perfect transitioning piece for fall. You can layer it on a short-sleeved tee if the weather is still a bit warm, or with a long-sleeved tee if it's cooler. I feel like it directly creates an edgy and effortless look. I have one at the moment, but I am definitely looking for more because you can pair these with denim jeans, skirts, or even cute sweatpants (and I know that I will be working from home in sweatpants all day, every day)."

Claire's Pick

Storets Lyla Oversized Knit Vest [13] ($45)

Kerry Pieri, Harper's Bazaar Fashion Director

"I just procured shiny Prada platforms. Anyone who knows me well knows that I'm almost never without a high heel, but times have changed and I'm wanting more cool, flat shoes to get around town in. I also think that while the loafer is doubtlessly a trend this fall, they are also a true classic. These feel like a mix of preppy and modern, which is exactly the look I'm loving right now."

Kerry's Pick

Prada Logo Platform Loafer [14] ($850)

Jenny Walton, Designer and Illustrator

"This fall I'm spending more on comfy knits. I think the ultimate is a nice knit bra and sweater combo, like the one I'm wearing here."

Jenny's Pick

Khaite Tan Eda Cashmere Soft Cup Bra [15] ($520) and Khaite Scarlet Cashmere Blend Cardigan [16] ($1,540)

Tyler McCall, Fashionista Editor-in-Chief

"For some reason, I've been on a big merch kick lately. I guess it's my way of supporting artists I love when I can't go see them in concert. I like a mix of casual with sleek, so I know I'll be pairing them all with the Jada skirt from 11 Honouré's in-house collection; it works now with sandals or flats, but it's also going to be great in winter with tights and boots."

Tyler's Pick

11 Honouré Jada Skirt [17] ($298)

Aemilia Madden, The Zoe Report Senior Fashion Editor

"I'm tired of sweats so I've been trying to get a little out of the box with comfy pieces in my closet. I love the coziness of a sweater vest. It's an easy transitional piece that's ideal for layering. My current favourite was a secondhand find, but there are lots of cute ones available."

Aemilia's Pick

Andersson Bell Crochet Knit Vest [18] ($160)

Natasha Marsh, Freelance Writer

"Usually during the fall I like to wear coloured or patterned trousers and dark denim. It always seems to match the colours that the weather brings to New York. Not to mention, my skin becomes so pale in the colder months, so it matches my skin tone a lot more. This fall I'm quarantined in Los Angeles, where the weather doesn't go below 80. I figured it was the perfect time to try a light wash jean while my skin tone is still sunkissed. These Mother jeans perfectly fit the bill. They are at least three shades lighter than the typical jeans I go for and the elastic band is perfect for being comfy at home or taking the jeans for a spin. I'm obsessed with the cut and fit of the leg. I can't wait to see what other light wash jeans I find this fall."

Natasha's Pick

Mother Denim The Springy Ankle Cowboys Don't Cry [19] ($268)

Rachael Wang, Stylist and Creative Consultant

"Usually this time of year I'm building my fall work wardrobe and investing in a new oversize blazer or a pair of pleated trousers that I'll wear to meetings and on shoot days. Now that the majority of the work I'm doing is from home, I'm reconsidering my approach. My biggest wardrobe need at the moment is a pair of technical but comfy outdoorsy shorts that I can bring on a camping trip I have coming up. Alder makes a recycled nylon pair with a flattering high waist and lots of pockets. I plan to wear them with my one-piece swimsuit as a bodysuit, a cardigan, and my beloved Chacos, all in black, for a sort of "dancer off-duty in the woods" vibe."

Rachael's Pick

Alder Take a Hike Shorts [20] ($85)
