11 A+ Style Lessons We Learned From The Ladies Of Insecure

07/12/2021 - 06:10 PM

With only three episodes left, HBO's Insecure [1] is almost done. Although we will miss watching the back-and-forth dating triangles, selfie mirror rapping, and powerful ride-or-die friendships unfold, the style lessons we learned from Issa, Molly [2], Kelli, and Tiffany, will be with us long after the show wraps.

After stepping in on season three of the show, costume designer Shiona Turini [3] curated the onscreen looks with the perfect mix of high fashion pieces, vintage [4], and everything in between. The show was a platform for our favourite Black-owned brands like Telfar [5] and Pyer Moss, showcasing all the different personalities of the four leading women.

We see Issa in bold prints, colourful patterns, political tees, and lots of vintage pieces [6]. Molly sports the perfect blend between working professional and full glam. Kelli is seen time and time again in unique, unafraid prints. And Tiffany, the most polished of them all, enjoys fitted dresses and feminine prints. It's been five seasons and countless reasons that Insecure will be in our style inspiration book forever. Read on for 11 lessons we learned from the iconic show.

Invest In Logos For a Show-Stopping Yet Elevated Look

Worn to be seen, logomania lets you enjoy your favourite brands logo, all over the clothes. Here, less is more is a thing of the past. Into the look? Try it with a logo sweater and jeans to dip your toe in the trend, or go all out with a matching logo set.

Go Monochromatic For an Elegant Outfit

One of the easiest ways to add interest to an outfit is with tonal or monochrome pieces, as seen here on Molly. Monochrome outfits are not only incredibly flattering, but they look effortless and put together. You can wear the same colour in the same material or add depth with different textures.

Elevate Your Sweatshirt Style

Supporting your school has never looked more chic. Pair your favourite college sweatshirt or tee with wide leg trousers and heels for an elevated look.

Mix And Match Your Prints For Added Fun

Why settle on one print when you can wear two? Mixing patterns whether stripes, geometric, polka-dots, florals, and everything in between, is a great way to show confidence and add an element of fun to your look. We call it, power clashing.

Go Bold With Your Beachwear

It might be winter but we always have warm weather on our mind. To match the hot temperatures and collective energy for the summer, go full on with your colour. The more the merrier here. Try a bold coloured swimsuit to make a statement at the beach. Or look to cutouts, like Molly, to standout in a black one-piece.

Rework a Tracksuit

Fashion is cyclical. Although tracksuits were popular in the '70s, they are back and with elevated silhouette and prints. The best part is you can dress it down with sneakers or sandals, or up with heels to channel your inner-Issa.

Pair Basic Staples With Sophisticated Items For an All Day Look

Molly, the shows powerful attorney, continues to pull out all the stops with her office wear. When paired with a button-up underneath, the dress is able to transition from your 9-5, to dinner plans.

Rethink Your Office Essentials

As more and more offices start to open up all over the country, we will be looking to Molly's fierce professional style for inspiration. A jumpsuit is an easy one-and-done outfit that will give you the joys of both comfort and elevated style.

Make Your Athleisure a Full-On Fashion Moment

Issa taught us that whether we are working out or running errands, athleisure doesn't have to be boring. Here, she pairs a cute workout set with a bold patterned lightweight jacket that easily transitions from the gym to errands around town.

Invest In a Solid Statement Piece

A cutout blazer in a pop of colour is the showstopping item you need in your closet. And sure, statement pieces are an investment. They cost a lot more than your basics or staples, but the benefit you get out of them could last you a lifetime.

Upgrade Your Wardrobe With Structured Blouses

A well-structured statement top can do wonders. Regardless of the weather, short sleeve or long sleeve structure tops help any outfit come together and can be worn with jeans, shorts, skirts, and printed trousers.
