I'm Regressing Into the Juicy Tracksuit and Uggs Girl, and TBH I'm Fine with It

12/02/2021 - 09:55 PM

You know her well. Hell, maybe you even were her. She was in your 9 a.m. economics class — or perhaps the early morning shift at your summer job — casually strolling in 10 minutes late with an iced latte in hand (which, honestly, was probably what made her late in the first place). With an air of confidence, she enters the room, head held high under a velour zip-up hoodie and oversized sunglasses. Is there makeup under those sunglasses? Is it from last night, or this morning? Who knows? Who cares! She's the Juicy tracksuit [1] and Uggs girl [2], and she marches to the beat of her own drum.

For me, she was my best friend in college (and to this day), and my god, I wanted so badly to be her. I aspired to have the kind of confidence where I could roll out of bed, throw on a tracksuit, and subsequently saunter into class like I truly didn't give a f*ck. Alas, I didn't. Getting up early to primp for an hour straight was a common theme in my life that continued from high school through college, and for years into my professional life. That is, until lockdown went into effect.

My goal was to feel like I was comfortably in bed at all times, even on my weekly runs to the grocery store.

Once the stay-at-home orders were mandated, "real clothes" became a moot point, and I quickly found myself swapping out Zoom-appropriate tops (with mismatched bottoms, obviously) for full-on tracksuits. My goal was to feel like I was comfortably in bed at all times, even on my weekly runs to the grocery store. Online shopping spirals resulted in more and more tracksuits delivered to my apartment, often velour, and usually with sassy rhinestone lettering across the back. I loved the sense of humour inherent in logos as well as self-celebrating labels like "BABYGIRL" or "PRINCESS" stamped anywhere on the tracksuit.

Before I knew it, I found myself regressing into a look that would make Quinn Morgendorffer proud. "Why does it say Juicy across her butt?" I overheard a Cool Teen™ say from behind me on my daily walk. I channelled the confidence and pure 'tude of the OG tracksuit queen Paris Hilton [3] and shrugged it off. It's not my fault that they just didn't get it. That's a you problem, not a me problem. Real ones know about the allure of the Juicy tracksuit.

When I requested that my parents send me a pair of Ugg boots for Christmas, my transformation into the tracksuit and Uggs girl was finally complete. In my former life, I denounced Uggs as the worst and vowed never to wear them. "They make my feet look like loaves of bread!" I'd cry out in exasperation. "They're not even functional for snow!" As soon as I owned a pair, though, my thoughts changed in an instant. Immediately, I got the hype — they're warm as hell, they make you feel like you're walking on clouds, and lazy gals like myself can opt to go sans socks if we so desire. Who cares if I look like I'm wearing loaves of bread? Uggs were a moment, and when paired with my tracksuits, they were an entire mood. The Juicy x Uggs girl from my formative years was right all along, and we were wrong to ever doubt her. The days may be blurring together at this point in lockdown, and time is definitely a flat circle, but this iconic combo is very much real.
