18 Women-Owned Fashion Brands to Shop All the Time, but Especially This Month

02/03/2021 - 10:41 PM

Women's History Month [1] is the perfect time to brush up on your knowledge of fashion companies big and small [2] that were started by women — don't you think? While we're still keeping feel-good, work-from-home style top of mind this month, the fall and winter runways have such positive, uplifting tones, we're naturally inspired to do some shopping. Ahead, we curated a list of clothes and accessories we have our eyes on all because, yep, they're damn cute, but they all support strong businesswomen during March, when appreciation is key. Scroll to learn a little bit of backstory from each brand and see if our favourite site selections speak to you, too. Run and get your credit card JIC — all the (girl) power to you.

Americae

"Americae was founded by Gabriela Guaracao, who was born in Colombia but raised in the US. In fact, Americae is the Colombian word for "The Americas." Gabriela draws from both places, but is particularly inspired by the Amazonian plants. I fell especially in love with her Raw Emerald Ring [3] ($278), which is special because it's from the Ecosystem collection, incorporating materials from Japan and Milan. Emerald also happens to be my birthstone, and I'm always attracted to imperfections or unique details when it comes to gems." — Sarah Wasilak, editor, Fashion

J.Crew

"I can't get enough of the new sporty, vintage looks J.Crew just released. I had to immediately get this Collared Cashmere Sweater in Rugby Stripe [4] ($) to enjoy while it's still cooler." — Lisa Sugar, POPSUGAR editor-in-chief

Jade Swim

"It's no wonder the well-curated Jade Swim line was created by a former editor and stylist. Designer Brittany Korzerski finds the most flattering minimal silhouettes in luxe, sustainable fabrics, not to mention the perfect colour palette. I love the fit of the ribbed and terry collections, but don't wait — they sell out fast! My eye is on the Halo Top [5] ($120) and Bound Bottom [6] ($90)." — Dana Avidan Cohn, Executive Style Director

Mikoh

"Mikoh was started by Oleema and Kalani Miller and the brand always delivers when it comes to gorgeous swimsuits and ready-to-wear pieces like this stunning Mikoh Asami Maxi Dress [7] ($225)." — Nikita Charuza, editor, Fashion

Aurate New York

"I always keep Aurate's Organic Pearl Drop Huggie Earrings [8] ($180) close by to instantly elevate any laidback look. (Translation: when I have to jump on an unexpected video call.)" — Claire Stern, Contributing Editor

Brother Vellies

"I've been a longtime fan of Aurora James and her collection Brother Vellies [9]. Everything she creates is beautiful, thoughtful, and with intention. Not only does her collection help to preserve traditional African design practices and create sustainable jobs, but each item truly feels like a one-of-a-kind piece. I will be wearing these Greg Sandals [10] ($465) all spring and summer." — DAC

Le Ore

"Le Ore is Bandier's new private label made with sustainable fabrics like recycled yarn, and it speaks to my ideal active-leisure wardrobe. The Modena Cosy Knit Kit [11] ($310) is all I'm interested in wearing right now — and fits Jennifer Bandier's 2014 vision for the launch of her company: a destination for active and after." — SW

Jenny Bird

"Not only is Jenny Bird's collection beautifully crafted and made to last, she also focuses on philanthropy as part of her company's philosophy. Check out the site to learn more about partnerships with Dress For Success and The Pin Project, and scoop up my favourite Elli Mariner Chain Anklet [12] ($70)." — DAC

Cuyana

"Any bag brand that's good enough for Meghan Markle [13] is good enough for me. I've been eyeing Cuyana's bags for a while now but felt like I couldn't rationalize a purchase since I rarely go out anymore. But when I saw the new Double Loop Bag in Cappuccino [14] ($295) I knew I needed to just take the plunge and make the purchase. The piece is perfect for everyday wear, so I don't need any fancy occasion to take it out and about. My future self will thank me!" — Karenna Meredith, associate editor, Trending and Viral Features

Dôen

"I've been wanting to buy more dresses that feel easy and breezy to put on in the mornings. This Dôen Eclipse Nightgown in Blue Primerose [15] ($258) is not only gorgeous, but I love the romantic silhouette." — NC

Paloma Wool

"Paloma Wool is an independent label in Barcelona started by Paloma Lanna. The brand is known for its bold prints, like this Paloma Wool Dilema Mesh Top [16] ($79)." — NC

Hill House Home

"Nell Diamond found out she was pregnant two weeks after launching Hill House Home. I'm already obsessed with the brand's dreamy nap dresses and this Hill House NYC The House Cardigan [17] ($75) seems like the perfect piece to go on top of it." — NC

Donni

"Alyssa Wask created Donni in 2009, and the brand has exploded with its knit pieces. The brand has even expanded to jewellery, like these beautiful Donni Gem Drop [18] ($169) earrings." — NC

Subsurface

"Kari Fry's goal with the debut of Subsurface the first week of April 2020 was to approach fashion from a slow method, never anticipating the launch coinciding with a pandemic. Now more than ever, her vision for a specially curated wardrobe and only buying pieces that have intention becomes a reality. If the Silk Ribbon Top [19] ($210) and matching Silk Ribbon Pant [20] ($395) was my only luxe, indoor-meets-outdoor outfit until the end of time, I'd be A-OK." — SW

Sequence

"Created by designer and activist Ariela Suster, Sequence is working to disrupt the cycle of violence in El Salvador. Suster's rainbow collection is a symbol to always keep your heart and mind open, free of judgement for yourself and others. You can spread the sentiment with the Rainbow Knot Bracelet [21] ($25)." — DAC

Kerri Rosenthal

"I love this supercute and cosy blue Imperfect Heart Sweatshirt [22] ($138) from Kerri Rosenthal. Perfect for my WFH uniform when I want to spread some cheer over the screen!" — LS

Girlfriend

"Add Girlfriend Collective's Black Bike Unitard [23] ($78) to the list of things I never tire of wearing, especially during lockdown. In a compressive fabric made from recycled water bottles, it's comfortable enough to wear all day and has a built-in bra so you can workout in it too." — CS

BonBonWhims

"BonBonWhims Rainbow Lucky Gems [24] ($45) rings are a bonafide sensation. Started by Clare Ngai, the whimsical brand will take you right back to the 2000s with its colourful designs. Even Kylie Jenner is a fan [25]!" — NC
