Why the Cardigan Is the New House Dress For Autumn 2020

05/09/2020 - 03:15 PM

I was a big fan of the breezy, lightweight house dress [1] this past summer, but sadly, we're nearing September, and I'm ready to rotate back to jumpers. I may not be the only one. It seems as though celebrities we regularly take style influence from — Taylor Swift [2] and Harry Styles [3], just to name two major contenders — are team cardigan for autumn 2020 [4]. Here I am following in their footsteps, making the case for a cardigan that takes the place of your "throw-on-and-go" look this season.

Here's what I love about the cardigan: 1. It comes in a range of colours and materials, so you're taken care of whether you prefer ribbing or a wooly knit. 2. You can unbutton down to there to enjoy a sexier moment in your lingerie or loungewear, or you can bare a hint of your lacy bra [5] to make a statement. 3. It's usually thick enough to take the place of a light jacket for the first couple months of autumn, so running out to the shop requires no additional layering. 4. These are cosier than blazers, while still being a bit more fitted than a hoodie, allowing you to comfortably straddle the line between overly polished and lazy.

A browse through some of my favourite cardigan moments on Instagram, should convince you to join the squad in no time at all. It'd be a shame to keep Taylor and Harry waiting.

High-waisted jeans balance out a slouchy, cropped cardigan.

We love the idea of throwing a colourful cardi over a pair of overalls.

Stick to neutrals and coordinate it with some slouchy jeans and a necklace.

A cropped cardigan is a great way to show off your favourite statement belt.

Pull the neckline down towards your shoulders and pair with wide-legged jeans for a sexy, '70s vibe

Dress up an cosy, oversized cardigan with a pair of smart trousers.

Undo a few buttons at the bottom for an unexpected hint of skin.

A printed jumper looks chic thrown over a basic tee and high-waisted jeans.

An unexpected pairing: a cropped cardigan with a long denim skirt. Finish the look with a chunky necklace and strappy black pumps.

Tuck it into a wrap skirt of the same colour scheme.

Throw it over a printed pair of pants with slides.

Mix and match prints of the same hue.

Button it all the way up and add extra polish with a glam earring.

Another great work from home ensemble: A black jumper with matching sweats.

Pull up the sleeves of your cardigan and wear it tucked into your silk maxi skirt.

Substitute a light jacket with a long cardigan. Keep things streamlined underneath with skinny trousers and chunky black boots.

Try a feel-good, work-from-home look [7] with a scrunchie and nothing underneath.
