Chanel Is Making Mini Bags For Spring/Summer 2021 — and They Are So Freaking Cute

We're really enjoying Virginie Viard [1]'s new vision for Chanel. For the spring/summer 2021 season, the creative director chose to go in a very '80s and relaxed direction, introducing slouchy silhouettes, leather looks, and multicolored neon logo prints to the prim and proper fashion house.

There's definitely a freshness to the new Chanel girl: she's become more on trend, colourful, and low-key. "This collection is a tribute to the muses of the House," Viard said in a press statement. "Some of them are far away, it's been a long time since we saw them. Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld dressed so many actresses in films and in real life. I was thinking about them who make us dream so much. But without wanting to replicate. Without falling into a vintage citation. I wanted it to be very joyful, colourful, and very vibrant too."

Viard is introducing new shapes into the Chanel portfolio and skillfully using references of the past to inform the present, instead of allowing the collection to be defined by nostalgia. It's refreshing to see Dutch curve model Jill Kortleve back on the Chanel catwalk, while the rest of the model lineup is improving in diversity. Our favourite looks from Chanel's spring/summer 2021 collection were the oversize cardigans worn on their own, the slit-skirted pinafores layered over printed mesh, the long-sleeved tops, the more sensual dancewear-inspired pieces, and the new range of adorably chic mini bags.

Ahead, check out the full Chanel spring/summer 2021 collection.
