5 Cool British Streetwear Brands That Will Confirm Your Insta-Baddie Status

04/02/2020 - 05:16 PM

Central Saint Martins (CSM) has a track record of nurturing some of the greatest fashion designers of all time. Everyone from Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney [1], Kim Jones, and John Galliano are alumni of the prestigious art school. But, it's now a new era — which means there's a new vanguard of fresh, multicultural talent repositioning London as one of the most influential design districts in the world.

Streetwear or "Urban Luxe" [2], as the British Fashion Council prefers to call it, is the 21st century's most notable contribution to fashion history. However, the term "urban" has become problematic. In a speech by Tyler, The Creator [3] for his 2020 Grammy nomination, he said that "whenever guys that look like me do anything that's genre bending, they always put it in the rap or urban category." Tyler added, "I don't like that urban word. It's just a politically correct way to say the n-word." Although Tyler's speech was directed to music industry elites, it can also apply to those pulling the strings of the fashion industry.

The complicated, often parasitic relationship between streetwear and high fashion is what makes the aesthetic movement so revolutionary. It's the first time that we've seen the style and lifestyles of young people of colour directly influence what high fashion considers to be "cool". At the forefront of this cool subculture are a bunch of British brands — like CSM graduates Martine Rose, Aries, Mowalola, and Asai [4], plus London-based urban lifestyle brand Trapstar.

If you love knowing the best brands to shop before everyone else, then keep reading.

Mowalola

Mowalola Ogunlesi is a Nigerian-British designer who launched her eponymous brand upon graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2017. Mowalola's designs boast vibrant colours and strong silhouettes, inspired by Nigerian psychedelic rock. Solange Knowles [6] is a huge fan.

ASAI

ASAI's founder A Sai Ta is the British-Chinese-Vietnamese designer that you need on your radar. Known for its signature colourful, mesh patchwork designs, ASAI recently dropped an exclusive collab [7] with one of its biggest fans — Rihanna [8].

Aries

Aries has been on the scene since 2012, but most might not know that the streetwear brand is founded by a woman. Italian-born, London-based Sofia Prantera is a Central Saint Martins grad who tried her hand at launching two streetwear brands, Holmes and Silas, before striking gold with Aries (in collaboration with graphic designer Fergus Purcell).

TRAPSTAR

London brand TRAPSTAR was founded by three friends — Mikey, Will, and Lee — and quickly gained the attention of celebrities like ASAP Rocky and Rihanna [9]. The brand is more like a lifestyle, as it embodies the casual swag of hip-hop culture. Although it's been around since 2011, it's having a resurgence all over London's pavements.

Martine Rose

Martine Rose launched her namesake brand in 2007. Initially a menswear label, it's become a favourite of cool girls since the fashion industry embraced gender-neutral clothing. Martine has been nominated twice for the BFC's British Designer of the Year [10] for menswear — in 2018 and 2019.
