It's undeniable that Gucci [1] designer Alessandro Michele drew inspiration for his latest collection from a newcomer to the fashion world. And to classify her as such isn't to say that she hasn't been a style icon since the day she was born; it is more that the petite royal has only lived on this earth for a mere four-and-a-half years. It is, of course, Princess Charlotte [2] that we are talking about, and — yes — Gucci's menswear Fall/Winter 2020 collection of Peter Pan collars, mock dresses, and double-breasted coats seemed as though it had been ripped right from her London wardrobe. Charlotte's late grandmother Princess Diana would have been proud of the nod of approval from the world of high fashion.

While Alessandro hasn't spoken specifically to Charlotte herself, he instead made reference to another British staple in the world of elegance, telling Vogue only of his Liberty of London reference [3]: "Of course, liberty means freedom, so I decided to be a bit playful with this side — and it is a fantastic store, you go back to your childhood to be in it."

One of Princess Charlotte's go-to looks is the floral smocked dress. Mini in silhouette, often with a Peter Pan collar, and any range of pink and blue tones, it's a look we are now adopting for an older generation if Gucci has anything to say about it.

Red Coat: Gucci

Most Winter coats tend to be dark and drab, but Charlotte's looks suggest we dip our toe into the world of colour from time to time. While her dresses often tend toward pastels, she inspired Gucci this season with a bright red coat she previously wore to her first day of nursery school.

Contrasting Collar: Gucci

The contrasting collar is another Princess Charlotte favourite, worn in many ways, shapes, forms, and colours. Gucci interpreted the trend through a babydoll dress, but the little royal has been known to wear everything from smocked dresses to button-down shirts and cardigans alike to achieve the same look.

Navy Coat: Gucci

We all remember that first tailored coat we had as a child, but few wore it quite as well as Princess Charlotte — navy in tone, and most likely some combination of velvet trim, a double-breasted silhouette, and a Peter Pan collar. If this season of Gucci has anything to say about it, it's time to go searching for that similar look in a slightly larger size this year.
