13 Types of Engagement Rings Jewelers Are Making Nonstop This Year: "We Can't Keep Enough"

15/07/2021 - 09:40 PM

Whether or not the celebrity engagement rings [1] you've seen affect your desired setting [2] — perhaps you're even inspired by those of close friends and family — we bet you want to know what's popular. That's why we reached out to our favourite jewellery designers [3] to ask the all-important question: what are the most requested styles of 2021? Everyone seems to agree that these days, brides-to-be [4] are less focussed on diamond clarity and carat size and way more excited to get inventive and express their personality through their chosen piece. KATKIM is making plenty of floating diamonds, which are particularly striking to the eye, while Stephanie Gottlieb sells heart-shaped stones, and Alison Lou is incorporating coloured enamel.

If budget [5] is (understandably) important to you, you'll be happy to learn that a lot of current trends are not out-of-this-world expensive. Antique diamonds and bands are in, which is also an ethical choice, and allows you to work with vintage materials for a fraction of the price. Meanwhile, Mateo New York "can't keep enough" of its coloured gemstones, which are more affordable than a flashy, oversize diamond. While you may be surprised that there are really as many as 13 major engagement ring trends to sift through this year, it's 2021, and the "you do you" approach to fashion has extended to even the most traditional items in our wardrobe. Ahead, see and shop the engagement ring requests today's top jewelers are creating most often.

Antique Diamonds

Ashley Zhang says, "these stones are unique, one-of-a-kind, and can have a great look for a lower budget! These diamonds were mined and cut by hand over 100 years ago, so they also make a great ethical choice as they are recycled."

Floating Diamonds

At KATKIM, "alternative and unconventional engagement rings have been hugely popular. Our clients are gravitating towards modern settings that are bold and distinctive but also hold a timeless quality."

Pear-Shaped Stones

Grace Lee says, "historically, I think people shy away from pear diamonds because they are not symmetrical but I love them for precisely that reason. The imbalance allows the space to balance out that space with other diamonds."

Valerie Madison 0.62ct Luna Blue Sapphire Pear and Diamond Engagement Ring [9] ($1,800)

Deco

Jennie Kwon says, "people just love the juxtaposition of something that feels like a nod to the past, but also feels modern and clean. We hand milgrain all of the beaded detailing on this piece and on our other deco style pieces, which gives this style a very personal, intimate feel. The design is low on the hand and contours beautifully so it really feels like it becomes a part of you."

Side Stones

The Sarah O. team gets plenty of requests for side stones with large, oval centre stones: "Our Vivien ring with side stones has been a fan favourite, so much so that it has inspired us to create more designs with that look and feel!"

Two-Stone Rings

Stephanie Gottlieb says, "I designed a two-stone for myself last summer when my daughter Goldie was born, with the intention of each stone representing one of my two kids. A lot of our brides are resonating with the updated take on a historically classic design, the Toi et Moi, and putting their own spin on it. Many of the two stones we've designed have featured two diamonds side by side, with each one representing one half of the couple. My personal favourites have featured a heart-shaped diamond."

Sofia Kaman Toi et Moi Double Pear Engagement Ring [12] ($22,500)

Coloured Gemstones

Mateo New York says, "we can't keep enough of our green amethyst and blue topaz Point of Focus ring. I think today's modern brides are OK with taking risks and not afraid of it! We adore this ring because its design is simple, yet visually stimulating with the vibrant emerald cut gemstone setting at its peak, accented by brilliant diamonds. The second best thing about this ring is that it sets perfectly with a diamond eternity wedding band."

Mateo New York 14kt Gold Blue Topaz Point of Focus Ring [13] ($1,375)

Mixed Metal

Heidi Gibson says, "I'm seeing a lot of mixed metal engagement rings on my production lists this year. The majority of my clients are still sticking with classic, all-white diamonds (which they'll never regret!) but adding a twist by combining yellow, rose, and white gold in interesting ways. It's the best of both worlds: classic and contemporary — my specialty!"

Heidi Gibson Cambria Ring [14] ($2,200)

Enamel

Alison Chemla of Alison Lou explains, "brides are wanting to wear rings that are not only original but easy to wear every day and stack seamlessly with their other pieces. Enamel brings personality and a touch of the unexpected to our designs — it is the Alison Lou signature."

Rose Cut Georgian Diamond Engagement Ring With Blue Enamel [15] ($7,490)

Geometric Shapes

Eva Zuckerman, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Eva Fehren says, "The consumer is getting more playful with the way they wear diamond rings and is drawn to the unique details and craftsmanship of each piece. The focus is less on the carat, cut, and clarity of the centre stone and more on the overall style and design of the engagement ring. Our portrait cut diamond rings, such as the Undercover Ring, have been getting a ton of love this year, as well as our Kent and Offset rings featuring geometric diamonds set asymmetrically on a diamond band. I love that these rings are classic enough to wear for years and pass down for generations, but unique enough to reflect the strong personal style of the woman wearing it."

Sethi Couture Kerri Princess Cut Diamond Yellow Gold Ring [16] ($2,750)

V-Shape

The VRAI team says, "the unique Signature V setting offers an adaptation of the classic solitaire with the V-shaped band. Customers are looking to create a ring that is unique, choosing diamond shapes that showcase their personal style and are personalizing with wedding stacks."

VRAI Signature V Diamond Solitaire [17] (From $1,190)

Under Halo

Brooke Brinkman, Vice President of Marketing and Communications at Simon G. says, "the design we are seeing most requested is the under halo style ring, which features a straight band with diamonds and a halo that sits just under the diamond, allowing the diamond to shine on its own, just adding a beautiful accent to the side view of the ring."

Emerald Cut Morganite and Diamond Ring [18] ($1,419)

Chunky

At Marrow Fine, "a big trend we are seeing currently is chunkier, vintage-inspired settings. The style has shifted from very delicate designs in recent years (think thin shanks with tiny bead prongs) to more metal-heavy settings, like bezels and Georgian-inspired settings. We personally love the statement factor this thicker style offers."

Marrow Fine 95ct Black Diamond George Ring [19] ($6,950)
