We spotted this Renaissance-inspired trend on a few of our favourite stars, like Zoey Deutch, Jodie Comer, and Olivia Colman, in a fabulous jewel-toned palette of scarlet, emerald, and yellow topaz. Big puff sleeves show us that the ubiquitous prairie dress trend of the past two years is continuing strong. The sweet, almost infantile sleeve shape, started in the 14th century, and got a 20th century refresh when Princess Diana of Wales wore an exaggerated puff sleeve gown for her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981. With popular European period dramas like The Crown leading conversations in popular culture, we aren't surprised that puff sleeve dresses and gowns are having their own 21st century revival. The puff sleeve, much like similar trends of pearl accessories and velvet-padded headbands, express our nostalgic fascination with a bygone formality. Also, perhaps this return to "sweetness" is a response to the hypersexual aesthetic of Instagram and the chaotic daily news cycle. Wonder how to rock this trend in 2020?
