H&M Joins Forces With Black Panther's Costume Designer For a Streetwear Collection

05/02/2020 - 01:24 PM

Ruth E. Carter is the costume designer behind major Hollywood films — like Black Panther [1], Malcolm X, and Selma. And now, the Oscar-winning designer is launching a streetwear collection [2] with H&M in honour of American Black History Month.

The 11-piece Ruth Carter x H&M collection includes oversized sweaters, sweatpants, t-shirts, and bucket hats in the Liberation flag colours of red, black, and green. The range is inspired by late '80s and early '90s streetwear and features graphic slogans, like "Truth," "Trust Your Voice," "Ruthless" (Ruth's nickname given to her by Spike Lee), and "American Costume Design". The Liberation flag depicted throughout the collection was put into effect in August 1920 by the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL).

"This collection serves to empower anyone with an inner creative who is passionate about nurturing their voice and determined to share their story - their art," Ruth says in a press release from H&M. "It is to inspire a new generation, who need to project a personal expression of inclusion, and who want to do it authentically — so I want to encourage them to 'Trust Their Voice'."

In addition to the collection, H&M has launched a scholarship with historically black university Hampton University — where Carter is an alumnus.

The inspirational Ruth Carter X H&M collection [3] will be available online and in select H&M stores from Feb. 13, with pieces ranging from £13-£40. Keep reading ahead for a preview of the collection, and a hilarious skit with Jay Versace and Ruth Carter.
