Kate Hudson [1]'s early 2000s movies [2] are my prime suggestion right now for content worth absorbing during the lockdown. You're probably like, "Yes Sarah, we know. You already dressed up like her [3] *eye roll*." But it's not just How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days that's chock-full of outfits I'd rather be wearing [4]. I still watch Fool's Gold obsessively before packing my bag for the beach because Kate's character Tess reminds me to include my printed headband — no bikini is complete without it! And I still eagerly await Liv's next outfit in Bride Wars, even though I've seen that movie like 10,000 times. But IDK man, that strapless Vera Wang wedding gown [5] just gets more and more majestic every time I see it.
Right now though, I'm hyper-focussed on the everyday looks that I can memorize as I slowly build up my Spring wardrobe in anticipation of better, brighter days ahead [6]. Being that a lot of 2020 trends [7] involve incorporating styles we saw gain popularity in the late '90s/early aughts, the characters Kate Hudson [8] plays in some of her greatest films — You, Me and Dupree, Le Divorce, Raising Helen, and the list goes on — are filling up my mood board. Kate wore the heck out of this tube top as Andie in 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, coordinated with a feminine eyelet skirt and a strappy little sandal — this look was golden.
The See By Chloé Trench Coat
In 2003's Le Divorce, Kate plays Isabel Walker, and Isabel Walker knows a thing or two about styling a trench as a dress. She layers a breezy striped scarf under the collar of her coat and secures a tiny white pouch underneath her arm. Oui! Sign me up for such simplicity.
The Ribbed Tank
I already dedicated a whole post to this look from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days [10], so you can be sure I'm serious about it. Andie looks effortless in an classic ribbed tank and throw-on-and-go jeans.
The Cream Suit
It's safe to say no one wears paper bag pants like Kate Hudson [11], achieving the white and off-white combination in this elegant pantsuit as Darcy in 2011's Something Borrowed.
The Black Stiletto Boots
Kate looks incredibly chic in a knee-length pencil skirt and patent leather stiletto boots as Helen Harris in 2004's Raising Helen.
The Candy Stripe Shorts
I can literally feel the sun greeting my legs in a pair of candy stripe mini-shorts like the ones Andie wears in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I'd also coordinate them with a neutral tee or bodysuit and a pair of skinny sunglasses.
The Silk Head Scarf
I'm a big fan of head scarves, but Kate takes them to the next level with a fully zipped patent moto jacket and gold satin miniskirt as Liv in 2009's Bride Wars.
The Dress and Cardigan Set
In Something Borrowed, Darcy wears this striped dress and cardigan co-ord similar to the ones we're shopping today, and picking one up in flirty colours like these is high up on my to-do list.
The Babydoll Crop Top
Kate plays Lucy Owens in 2000's About Adam, and if crop tops are back, a boho-inspired, off-the-shoulder one like this is the only type I'm interested in.
The Black Bikini
The way Tess styles her bikini in 2008's Fool's Gold is right up my alley: with messy beach hair, a printed headband, aviators, and a gold pendant necklace.
The Crochet Maxi Dress
Kate completely gives in to her inner bohemian goddess in this maxi and printed headband on the beach as Darcy in Something Borrowed.
The Retro Dress
Who can ever forget Andie belting out "You're So Vain" in Ben's apartment in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days? I still love a quirky printed teacup dress like this one with slick, straight hair.
The One-Shoulder Top
Isabel coordinates perfectly with Yves in Le Divorce wearing this striped one-shoulder drop-waist top and flares – the look couldn't be more early 2000s.
The Tinted Sunglasses
Necessary: a pair of yellow-tinted square sunglasses to wear out with a sporty mesh zip-up, just like the one Helen wears in Raising Helen.
The Backless Slip Dress
Ah, yes. Darcy pretty much sets the tone for a proper early 2000s going-out moment in this white silk halter minidress complete with a Cartier Love bracelet in Something Borrowed.
Denim-on-Denim
Helen coordinates a white chambray top with a long, green khaki skirt in Raising Helen. There's something so subtly sexy and "mom cool" about this combination.
