Katie Holmes, the unanticipated queen of effortless New York City style, was spotted heading into a benefit event in a white ruched Khaite dress from the brand's Pre-Fall 2020 collection. I wasn't surprised I liked the dress right off the bat — I'm super into ruching because it's such an unexpected figure-flattering detail, and Khaite continuously churns out statement dresses that soar to the top of my wish list — but I was surprised by how smitten I was over Katie's styling. The 41-year-old actress shifted the neckline even more off-kilter than it was originally presented in the lookbook, all to show off a skinny black bra strap that drew attention to her strappy sandals. And yes, I know what you're thinking, because I thought it too: Katie was wearing sheer tights under those heels!
Open-toed footwear over tights is sort of like this unspoken faux pas; we just never intentionally do it. First of all, most of my sandals are stored at the top of my closet, and I'm much too lazy to reach for them during the Winter months. Second of all, if I'm wearing tights, that means it's cold out, and if it's cold out, sandals are the last thing I'm thinking about. But Katie made the case, and it's a good one. If the attire is eveningwear and the look has this very cool '80s aesthetic, it can be done — and I think it'd even work with your going-out minidress, too. So, what do you think?
