From a plunging Schiaparelli cone-bra gown [1] to a sheer Mugler cutout catsuit [2], Kylie Jenner has taken Paris Fashion Week [3] by storm this season, sitting front row [4] at all the major shows. She arrived at Balenciaga on Sunday, Oct. 2, dressed in a hard-to-miss ensemble that brought her style streak to a fashionable close.
Drenched in this season's hottest colour, hot pink [5], she wore a long-sleeved maxi dress with the texture of a shaggy carpet. The Balenciaga design looked anything but conventional with its curve-hugging bodice and comfortable silhouette. Taking a style cue [6] from her sister Kim Kardashian [7], she accessorised with large, futuristic sunglasses featuring round black lenses and curvy white frames. She also threw on a pair of silver hoop earrings and styled her hair into a low ponytail with two curls framing her face. A pair of pointy black boots and a large matching cloud clutch rounded out the look.
Jenner arrived alongside her sister Khloé Kardashian, who also took a page out of Kim's playbook and dressed in an all-black Balenciaga jacket, pantaleggings [8], dark sunglasses, and an Hourglass bag. Their niece North West was also in attendance, exuding her signature cool aesthetic [9] in distressed denim, an oversize jacket, and slides. Other notable looks included Alexa Demie's sparkly red dress, Barbie Ferreira's black turtleneck number, and Emily Ratajkowski's sporty two-piece set.
Meanwhile, Kanye West [10] opened the Balenciaga runway show in military garb, preceding models who paraded in a series of mostly distressed, seemingly war-torn garments — their hems soaked in muddy water. The 75-look collection was unveiled on a muddy catwalk, conveying Creative Director Demna's outlook on the world in light of the war in Ukraine, rising inequality, an impending climate crisis, and the attack on women's rights [11].
The stageing was meant to challenge the notion of luxury, as Demna explained: "Putting luxury fashion into the box of polished, exclusive, and visually expensive is limited and pretty old school." He described the show as a companion piece to last season's catwalk, which took place in a glass rotunda simulating a giant snow globe and touted trash bags [12] as the new silhouette du jour.
Despite its spot-on execution and message, Demna's show may also resonate as glorifying hardships during such sensitive times. Fashion, after all, is a reflection of society, but it often has the unintended effect of commodifying lived experiences.
