Olivia Rodrigo [1]'s edgy style streak continues with her latest appearance. Joining American singer Billy Joel on stage on 24 Aug. at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the singer wore a fun ensemble that perfectly encapsulates her personal style. Designed by Vivienne Westwood [2], the outfit involved a black velvet corset top that curves to reveal glimpses of her middle. The garment's boned bodice recalls Victorian-style corsets [3], although Rodrigo styled it in a contemporary way.
First, she wore a historical lingerie garment as outerwear, then she paired it with a matching velvet choker and a yellow-and-orange tartan plaid skirt. Her sheer hosiery and tall black lace-up boots perfectly rounded out the theme. The 19-year-old star finished with a fuchsia lip and wore her brown waves in a middle bun. Rodrigo performed "Deja Vu" and "Uptown Girl" with Joel, who looked classic in an all-black suit.
This isn't the first time the Gen Z star has worked with Vivienne Westwood or endorsed the corset trend [4]. Back in April, she wowed at the Grammys in a black Vivienne Westwood dress [5] with the outline of a woman's body along the front and back in pink.
Although she occasionally goes for colour (see her purple Versace gown [6] at the 2022 Met Gala or hot-pink Versace corset mini [7] for the afterparty), Rodrigo often sticks to a dark palette, like she did on 2 Aug., when she stepped out in a Mirror Palais LBD [8]. She gave the lacy minidress a dark-academia twist [9] by styling it with white crew socks and black loafers.
