Pantone's Post-Lockdown Colour Predictions Say It Loud and Clear: We All Need a Holiday

15/03/2021 - 03:55 PM

If there's one thing we need in our post-lockdown wardrobes, it's colour. After a year of swapping grey pyjamas [1] for black ones, it's almost time to step out and be seen by the world. The best way to do this? In a showstopping palette. If you don't know where to start, Pantone [2] is here to guide the way.

Following Fashion Month, Pantone shares their Fashion Colour Trend Report — their expert forecast on the hottest hues to look out for. Among their top 10 picks for New York Fashion Week and London Fashion Week [3], three of them perfectly reflect our collective moods after our shared lockdown experience. Shades of red and pink are definite standouts – a soft, delicate blush gives a feeling of gentleness that's welcomed after a tough time, and a deep and sultry wine reminds us of the incredible growth we've experienced. It looks like we'll be looking at the world through rose-coloured glasses in more ways than one.

Pantone also highlights a brilliant blue that fosters feelings of excitement for our impending freedom, and will have you longing to dive into the nearest body of water as soon as we're allowed to travel again. The main takeaway? When it comes to wearing colour in 2021, it's go big or go home — and we've all had enough of being at home.

Pantone Fashion Colour Trend: First Blush

If you want to keep things light, try Pantone's First Blush — a shade the company describes as a "delicate and tender pink". After a tough year, we all deserve a bit of gentleness in our lives . . . and in our wardrobes. Simone Rocha [4] uses the shade to demonstrate a "fragile rebel" look, adding a tougher edge to her soft aesthetic. Molly Goddard pairs a blush coat with golden boots, but for a simpler option, Huishan Zhang and Self-Portrait present minimal pink dresses.

Pantone Fashion Colour Trend: Winery

If First Blush is too delicate, perhaps Winery is for you. According to Pantone, "Robust Winery implies poise and finesse." Feeling like the pandemic has matured you beyond your years like a fine wine? This is precisely the vibe Vivienne Westwood gives with the brand's form-fitting dress in the sultry shade (shown here). Self-Portrait's minidress is the picture of elegance, but if you're tentative, take a cue from Molly Goddard and simply add a wine-hued handbag.

Pantone Fashion Colour Trend: Mykonos Blue

For a real escape from the reality of the past year, you'll likely gravitate towards a key shade at New York Fashion Week: Mykonos Blue. If you didn't get a chance to actually head out to Mykonos last summer, you can at least channel the holiday vibes with what Pantone describes as a "brisk blue evocative of the Aegean Sea." Zimmermann (shown here) does it best with a flouncy minidress that features sparkling embellishments reminiscent of the glimmering ocean. Carolina Herrera also goes for sparkles, showing a sequinned minidress in the shade. For a sexier take, 16Arlington's figure-hugging look is perfect inspiration for the return of club nights come 21 June.
