We love when our latest binge-watch happens to deliver in the style department, too — cue the third season of Hulu's quirky comedy, Shrill [1], starring Aidy Bryant as Annie, a journalist navigating body image, relationships, and workplace drama. Set in Portland, the show hits on just the right brand of dressing up without trying too hard.
Annie's style is a refreshing mix of vintage-feeling finds and staples; it's equal parts charming and cool. That's all thanks to costume designer Amanda Needham, who picked up a couple of Emmys for her work on Portlandia. Here, Amanda excels at crafting a wardrobe that feels current, without getting caught up in trends. Needham captures Annie's unique sense of style with a mix of off-the-rack finds, from stores like ASOS and designers like Rachel Antonoff, though as she told Vox in an interview shortly after the show's release, she made many of the looks herself [2]. That's because designers just didn't have the sizes she needed available when they started filming. Instead, she began to see what many have long known to be true of the fashion industry: it has a long way to go when it comes to making quality clothing available for all bodies.
The beauty of Shrill's costume design is how it celebrates Annie and women who see themselves in her. Her clothes defy the old stereotypes of dressing curvy women and the notion that they want to hide their bodies. Annie, like her roommate and pal, Fran, played by Lolly Adefope, has an innate interest in fashion and in developing her own style. Both women are seen throughout the series in a lineup of playful silhouettes and punchy colours that have won over an audience of fans who are here as much for the story as they are for the looks.
