Thanks to COVID-19, a Streetwear Shortage Is on the Horizon in the UK

Following a recent report by The Guardian , it's become clear that UK retailers [1] are struggling to meet demands for athleisure and streetwear [2] as a result of the pandemic. With more and more of us working from home, working out at home, and exercising the need to be comfortable (no pun intended), the sheer amount of items we're on the lookout for is starting to seriously outweigh the supply. As a result, items such as tracksuits, trainers, and running gear are soon going to be harder to find.

Edited, a fashion analysis firm [3], stated that "the number of sportswear items sold out online over the past month had increased by 17% compared with last year and it expected to rise further should the UK face a second lockdown."

As a result of the different restrictions across the world, clothing brands and retailers are struggling to get stock from their overseas warehouses, especially in areas such as Bangladesh and Indonesia, notorious for their mass clothing production [4]. With less access to stock comes less availability for purchase, meaning that many of us will soon struggle to find the items on our WFH wish list and that retailers miss out on some guaranteed revenue.

As a result, this can even lead to an increase in the price we do pay for these items, particularly those rarer finds that end up being sold on third-party sites for double the price. Now this is something many of us can genuinely vouch for, especially those of you who have ever tried to get your hands on a Nike tennis skirt on Depop [5] for less than £100. Safe to say, they do not exist.

All jokes aside, it's time to get those ASOS back in stock notifications on, because with the UK now officially in Tier 2 of the lockdown system [6], it seems that home workouts and home working is here to stay.
