Screen Style: The Movies and TV Shows Shaping Our Wardrobes This Year

13/01/2021 - 10:14 AM

It's no secret that the stylish characters of our favourite films and TV series were the unexpected fashion influencers of 2020. In only 28 days, The Queen's Gambit [1] was Netflix's most watched series to date, and that's heavily in part due to Beth Harmon's bombshell '60s style. Then, the internet was divided over that green coat on The Undoing [2] and if we should all be dressing like Regency-era debutantes in Bridgeton [3]. If you've been living vicariously through glamorous onscreen fashion moments lately, then you'll love the stylish movies and tv shows coming up in 2021.

This year's most fashionable films include psychological thriller Last Night in Soho [4], directed by Edgar Wright and starring Anya Taylor-Joy as an up-and-coming fashion designer in 1960s London. Selena Gomez [5] is also involved in a stylish psychological thriller this year, Dollhouse, that is described to be like Black Swan with a focus on New York City's elite fashion scene. And what is an iconic fashion moment without a bit of nostalgia? One of fashion's favourite films is returning with The Matrix 4, and we can't wait to see how the costume designer creates a wardrobe suited for today's hackers on the dark web.

The Matrix isn't the only throwback fashion moment we're getting in 2021. OG stylish series like Gossip Girl [6]'s reboot and Sex and the City [7]'s latest instalment And Just Like That. . . are courting new audiences on HBO with wardrobes created by the original costume designers Eric Daman and Patricia Field. HBO is also giving us a Gen Z fashion fix with the second special episode of Euphoria [8] set to premiere in late January. And if you fancy some new series to add to your watch list, we recommend Netflix's Inventing Anna, which is based on a New York scammer that tricks Manhattan into thinking she's an heiress, and BBC's Ridley Road that follows a Jewish hairdresser fighting against fascism and racism in 1960s London.

Ahead, check out the details on eight stylish movies and TV shows that will be shaping our wardrobes this year.

Last Night in Soho

If you liked The Queen's Gambit, then you'll love Last Night in Soho [9]. Directed by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim vs the World), Last Night in Soho stars Anya Taylor-Joy as "Sandy" with a supporting role by Doctor Who's Matt Smith. The stylish psychological thriller is set in 1960s Soho, London and follows a passionate young fashion designer, Sandy, who mysteriously appears in the decade to meet her idol. While she enjoys the glamour of the swinging '60s, the fabric of time seems to unravel, and nothing is what it seems.

Expected Premiere: 23 April, 2021

Inventing Anna

Created and produced by Bridgerton [10]'s Shonda Rhimes and based on the New York Magazine article "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People" by Jessica Pressler, Inventing Anna [11] is a Netflix series about scam artist Anna Delvey (played by Julia Garner) who fooled Manhattan's elite into thinking she was an heiress.

Expected Premiere: 2021

Dollhouse

Dollhouse is a horror-thriller about New York City's elite fashion scene. The film is being compared to Black Swan and is being coproduced by Selena Gomez [12], who will likely appear in a starring role. With limited details available, Dollhouse is currently looking for a director, according to Variety [13].

Expected Premiere: To be confirmed.

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl [14] is getting a delicious reboot thanks to HBO, with wardrobe by the series's original costume designer Eric Daman and a diverse cast including a very stylish "Julien Calloway" played by Jordan Alexander, who is described as "influence." [15]

Expected Premiere: 2021

Euphoria Part II

Euphoria [16]'s second special episode might be all about Jules (Hunter Schafer), but we'll be watching all of the on-trend outfits worn by our favourite group of rebellious high schoolers — Rue (Zendaya [17]), Maddy (Alexa Demie), Kat (Barbie Ferreira), and Cassie (Syndey Sweeney).

Expected Premiere: 25 Jan., 2021

Ridley Road

BBC's Ridley Road [18] is a four-part thriller series starring Aggi O'Casey as Jewish hairdresser "Vivien Epstein". In 1960's London, Epstein goes undercover in a neo-Nazi organisation to fight against fascism and racism through the prominent 62 Group coalition.

Expected Premiere: 2021

And Just Like That…

What's Sex and the City [19] without Samantha? The OG fashion series is getting the HBO reboot that fans have been hoping for titled And Just Like That…, and although Kim Cattrall [20] won't be reprising her role as the sex-positive publicist Samantha Jones, we're excited that the original costume designer Patricia Field will be dressing the glamorous trio.

Expected Premiere: Late 2021, or early 2022.

The Matrix 4

The Matrix 4 [21] is guaranteed to be filled with iconic fashion moments. Starring original cast members Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Jada Pinkett Smith [22] as Niobe, and Keanu Reeves [23] as Thomas A. Anderson / Neo, we are keen to see how costume designer Lindsay Pugh updates the aesthetic of one of fashion's favourite films.
