Two-stone engagement rings are dynamic and unique, but Megan Fox isn't the first star to choose the dual-stone shape. They're called "toi et moi" rings, and celebs including Solange Knowles, Emily Ratajkowski, and Ariana Grande have given the romantic ring shape a recent revival.

The toi-et-moi ring dates back to the 18th century. Translating to "you and me" in French, the ring features two stones set side by side on a band that coils together. "The two stones represent the connection and union between two people but also the stones can carry symbolism themselves too by using birth stones for example," London-based jeweller Emma Clarkson Webb told POPSUGAR. "People want to make their love story more prominent when designing a bespoke ring and this design certainly oozes romance." Fellow jeweller Rachel Boston added that she "thinks the renewed popularity of the style is partially due to the symbolism of the ring, and it is telling that we notice it being more popular with couples who decide to design their engagement ring together. The layout of the ring also leaves a lot of scope for play, another reason for its renewed popularity: we can explore so many options to find the perfect balance, colour, and scale between the two stones, a layout completely unique to the wearer. It's extremely unlikely anyone will have a ring just like it, which is also part of the appeal of this style."

Napoleon Bonaparte is recorded as one of the first people to adopt the toi-et-moi ring trend. In 1796, he proposed to Joséphine de Beauharnais with a diamond-and-sapphire toi-et-moi ring (pictured below). Each of the two gems is said to weigh a little under one carat, and the Bonaparte/Beauharnais ring recently went up for auction in 2013 at a starting price of £14,600 and sold for around £695,800.

Following Bonaparte's proposal to Beauharnais, John F. Kennedy proposed to Jacqueline Bouvier with a diamond-and-emerald toi-et-moi ring in 1953. The Kennedy/Bouvier ring featured a 2.88-carat diamond set beside a 2.84-carat emerald and was designed by Van Cleef & Arpels. More recently, Solange Knowles started a toi-et-moi revival amongst the celebrity set when she debuted an art deco two-stone engagement ring in 2014 that included an emerald-cut and a square-cut diamond.

In 2018, Emily Ratajkowski added to the toi-et-moi trend and designed a massive two-stone diamond ring that included a princess-cut and a pear-cut stone. Since then, we've seen the two-stone engagement ring trend become a mainstay in the bridal industry. Ariana Grande debuted a two-stone ring when she announced her proposal to Dalton Gomez in 2020. Grande's ring featured a tilted oval-shaped diamond next to a delicate freshwater pearl. In 2021, Kylie Jenner and daughter Stormi Webster were gifted matching diamond two-stone rings from Travis Scott. And now in 2022, Megan Fox has added to the momentum and declared the toi-et-moi engagement ring one of the first big bridal trends of 2022. Fox's ring featured two pear-shaped stones, of which the diamond represents Machine Gun Kelly's birthstone and the emerald represents Fox's.
