How WandaVision Uses Fashion Across the Decades to Tell a Thoroughly Timeless Story

04/03/2021 - 06:01 PM

No detail was spared in the production of WandaVision [1] on Disney+; from the clever nods to beloved sitcoms to the meaningful Marvel Easter eggs [2]. It should come as no surprise that the costumes were given equally meticulous thought, as Wanda and Vision drifted from one decade to the next in their alternate reality masquerading as a TV show. The various styles posed an interesting (and inviting!) challenge for Oscar-nominated designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who previously created looks for films like Thor: Ragnarok and JoJo Rabbit. "It is rare to find a story that arcs through so many decades without the characters ageing," Mayes said in a production brief, according to Grazia Magazine. She described the production process as "brilliant" and enjoyed the exciting opportunity each episode presented. Get a refresh on the incredible outfits the show has shown us so far before the season finale on March 5, and see if there are any other hidden gems to be found before all our questions are answered.

WandaVision's 1950's Fashion

As fans know, the series starts out in the 1950's with a black-and-white story á la I Love Lucy. We see Wanda wearing tea-length dresses with bows and pearls. An especially lovely scene comes right at the beginning of the first episode, where Wanda and Vision waltz into their home wearing their wedding outfits.

"The suit Vision wears and the wedding dress we made for Wanda for the opening titles were my favourite creations from that episode," Mayes revealed. "They were both made from scratch, and Paul loved the suit and tie so much he was sad it couldn't be used for the whole episode. Wanda's dress was a beautiful homage to Audrey Hepburn."

WandaVision's 1960's Fashion

Bless the 1960's for bringing pants into mainstream style for women. Instead of the full-skirt dresses, Wanda starts wearing cardigans and boatneck tops. She also meets Geraldine (later revealed to be Monica Rambeau) who looks smart in a blazer and patterned blouse.

WandaVision's 1970's Fashion

WandaVision [3] in technicolor! The 1970's episode presented a whole new world of possibilities for Mayes, who called Wanda's psychedelic print maternity dress "particularly stunning." There are also plenty of wide-leg jeans and sweater vests to be seen, a nice nod to shows like The Partridge Family.

WandaVision's 1980's Fashion

There's nothing quite so obviously '80s as Agnes's gym outfit from the fifth episode. Her bright-coloured tights, exercise dress, shrug, and complementary headband scream Jane Fonda workout video, right? Wanda, on the other hand, keeps things pretty neutral in a floral vest and turtleneck with tan slacks.

WandaVision's 1990's Fashion

Oh, the plaid and the high-waisted jeans — we must be in the '90s. Wanda's signature look for this episode could be considered a subtle Roseanne reference, but with the way trends of this decade are resurfacing these days, we wouldn't be surprised to see a similar look pop up in the 2020's either.

WandaVision's 2000's Fashion

Perhaps one of the most meaningful styling moments of the show, episode six pulls its outfit inspiration directly from Marvel lore. A well-placed Halloween [4] storyline allows Wanda and Vision to dress up as their original comic book selves. According to Vanity Fair, Elizabeth "fought" for this homage [5] to make it into the show.

"I was so excited," she said on the Still Watching podcast. "They were trying to figure out how big of a nod to the character we were going to do and it didn't start off with the classic Scarlet Witch costume." But Elizabeth persisted and said, "If Paul's doing it, I'm doing it."

WandaVision's 2010's Fashion

The seventh episode as a whole draws heavily from Modern Family. Wanda's at-home style could be connected to Claire Dunphy, but it's also a reflection of her emotional state in this episode. Things are falling apart in the "oasis" she created for herself. Costumes and appearances are no longer the priority, and quite frankly, may no longer be in her control.

WandaVision's Present Day Fashion

There have been few glimpses of Wanda outside of Westview and her imposed Hex, but it appears Marvel stuck with her look from previous movies for her present day look. She wears a leather trench, structured top, and of course, fingerless gloves for her glowing powers to break free. We anticipate that in the final episode, there'll be more to see from Wanda outside of the sitcom life — her fashion choices will just be the cherry on top.
