Our Fashion Editors' Guide to Fall Shopping Based on Personality Type

03/09/2020 - 01:20 PM

Without an in-person NYFW [1] to dress up for this fall, as fashion people, we're kind of itching to get dressed [2]. Can you blame us? But rather than think about how trends may be changing or what It items are bubbling up on Instagram, we're taking September to hit the reset button and shop for pieces that really speak to who we are as individuals. Reconnecting with your personal style after months of lockdown [3] can be difficult, but sometimes all you need is a small push to remind yourself what colours [4] you feel most confident in and which jewellery pieces you love so much, you literally never want to take them off.

Ahead, we're breaking down the looks we're reaching for, even if they're not necessarily the same ones everyone else is reaching for. For example, I'm shopping for a neon pouch bag with a wavy handle, while Dana is looking for chunky black boots that speak to her aesthetic and would look great styled with all the midi dresses in her closet. I guess, to put it simply, this fall wish list can be labeled as such: "different strokes for different folks." Hopefully, you find something unique here that you enjoy wearing, too.

Chaser Vote Tee

"The countdown to the election is here, and now more than ever, spreading the message to get people to vote is extremely important, which is why I plan to wear that on my shirt with this Chaser Vote Tee [6] ($62)." — Lisa Sugar, president

Joseph

"I love the way knit dresses can be layered and transformed according to the weather or how you're feeling any particular day. I'll wear this Joseph Darla Cotton Viscose Rib Dress [7] ($238, originally $595) bare with slides for now and add a slouchy pullover sweater and boots when fall arrives for real." — Hannah Weil McKinley, fashion director

Staud Kira Top

"I like to buy pieces that are multifunctional. This luxe knit Staud Kira Top [8] ($215) looks great on its own or layered under a white button-down shirt or blazer." — Dana Avidan Cohn, executive style director

LèRumi Freya Sweater Dress

"I discovered LèRumi this past month after Selena Gomez wore a little gingham romper from the brand in the "Ice Cream" music video [9]. I instantly fell in love with the label's sensual sets and the Freya Sweater Dress [10] ($134) in particular, which is exactly what I want to wear around the house with my slippers this fall." — Sarah Wasilak, editor, Fashion

Aerie Ribbed Long Sleeve T-Shirt

"I don't think you can own enough of long-sleeved tees like this Ribbed Tee from Aerie [11] ($29). I love the dainty print on it." — Nikita Charuza, Editor, Fashion

adidas x Pharrell Williams Boost Slides

"I love wearing slides, so when Pharrell launched his latest Boost Slides [12] ($100) with adidas, I knew I wanted them ASAP. I was thrilled that navy was the first colour released [13], since that is my go-to shade!" — LS

Tory Burch French Terry Chevron Hoodie

"This Tory Burch French Terry Chevron Hoodie [14] ($178) offers a preppy-cum-cool spin on the staple I've been living in. Instead of surrendering to loungewear, I like to think I'm acknowledging just how essential they've become in my closet, and I'm choosing pieces in the same silhouette that feel really special in some way." — HWM

Miu Miu Vintage Crystal Bead Necklace

"Miu Miu will always be my favourite brand, so I'm constantly finding myself searching for preowned treasures on vintage sites. Miu Miu items already have such a strong story behind them — every one of Ms. Prada's collections does! — and I'd love to give this Crystal Bead Necklace [15] ($410, originally $455) a whole new life, perhaps at a romantic event for my wedding next year." — SW

Arq Wide-Strap Bra

"I've basically tossed aside most of my bras and have only been wearing cosy ones like this Arq Wide-Strap Bra [16] ($36) piece. I love the checkered print on it. I also particularly love the Arq High-Rise Undies [17] ($30) that come in the same print!" — NC

Mykita x Maison Margiela MMCIRCLE002

"You know when you land on an accessory and you just instantly know it was made for you? That's how I feel about the Mykita x Maison Margiela MMCIRCLE002 sunglasses [18] ($505), which are from a new collaboration chock-full of styles that have that extra something special. The sky blue and camel colour combination speaks to me." — SW

Dr. Martens Black 1460 Mono Lace-Up Boots

"I was looking for a pair of heavier black boots to wear with dresses this fall, but wanted something classic. I like the all black stitching on these Dr. Martens Mono Lace-Up Boots [19] ($150). It makes them much easier to pare back with just about any look." — DAC

Eliou Pearly-Eyed Turquoise Necklace

"I love anything with an evil eye on it. This Eliou Pearly-Eyed Turquoise Necklace [20] ($155) is supercute with the peal details, and I can picture myself wearing it every day." — NC

Live the Process Flare Pants

"Live the Process makes the perfect cuts in materials you want to live in. These Live the Process Flare Pants [21] ($248) have become a part of my regular wardrobe, paired with tees, hoodies, button-downs, and slides. I love that they're a really chic take on 'sweatpants.'" — HWM

Marc Jacobs Tote Bag + Letter Patch

"I love that you can now personalize a Marc Jacobs tote [22] ($195) with these cute varsity Letter Patches [23] ($8)! A reason to get both. Blue bags are my favourite, and even if I am carrying a lot less these days, I can still invest in a large, practical bag that I know will get used often soon." — LS

Zara Ribbed Jacket

"Matching sets are the new tie-dye, and this Zara Ribbed Jacket [24] ($45) and Ribbed Crop Top [25] ($26) is the perfect way for me to dip my toe in and give the trend a try." — NC

Cult Gaia Tao Shell Sandal

"I know they don't necessarily scream fall, but shells are a year-round accessory for me personally. I reconnect with my soul when I'm by the ocean. The Cult Gaia Tao Shell Sandals [26] ($408) are the object of my desire, and that's not going to change. I'll find a way to wear them with socks in the beginning, and keep them safe and sound for my next beach trip. I think of this purchase as my farewell to summer." — SW

BYCHARI Ashli Anklet

"I've been wearing anklets all summer and wanted to find one that was delicate but could still be worn in the fall. I love this barely there version from BYCHARI called the Ashli Anklet [27] ($50)." — DAC

Amanda Uprichard Track Romper

"Sporty and sexy, I love this adorable navy Amanda Uprichard Track Romper [28] ($180). Since we finally get some warmer weather in Sept. and Oct. in SF, I can enjoy this adorable look before it's too late. And I can hope to enjoy it in a warm destination whenever I start to travel again. Love that I can dress this up and down with a heel or sneaker." — LS

Jenni Kayne Shearling Mules

"I'm not wearing heels, but that doesn't mean I've given up on shoes with personality. These Jenni Kayne Shearling Mules [29] ($395) are my ideal for perking up everything from laid-back denim to a knit dress." — HWM

Anonie Wavy Bag

"Anonie is one of those fun brands I discovered by way of my Instagram explore page. I really love vibrant bags that lend my look a pop of colour, and I'm particularly obsessed with the squiggly handle on the lime Wavy bag [30] ($195)." — SW

Fiorucci Angels Sweatshirt Pale Blue

"There's something so soothing about this baby blue Fiorucci Angels Sweatshirt [31] ($170) don't you think? I can imagine myself snuggling into it one cosy fall day." — NC

Mad Happy Optimism Heritage Crewneck in Marshmallow

"I'm always watching Mad Happy for the latest drop. I especially love the brand's Local Optimist collections and messageing. Limited editions of comfy sweatshirts has become an unhealthy obsession of mine. The design and fonts are so playful. I have my eye on the
Optimism Heritage Crewneck [32] ($165)." — LS

Aritiza TNA Atmosphere Hi-Rise Short

"I love the bright blue hue of these Aritiza TNA Atmosphere Hi-Rise Shorts [33] ($38). I can wear them with a crop top or hoodie, depending on my mood." — NC

Brother Vellies Picnic Shoe in Midnight

"I instantly fell in love with these classic Mary Janes, called the Picnic Shoe [34] ($425), with a sweet heart-shaped Swarovski buckle from Brother Vellies. I love buying shoes that show my personality that can be playful and fun but also practical and remain in my closet for years to come." — LS
