What Not To Wear In 2020, And What To Wear Instead

18/12/2019 - 09:03 PM

As we enter the new year [1], we all take the time to re-evaluate our existing wardrobes. What to keep, what to donate, what to save . . . the piles are amassing all around us. But, as we rid our wardrobes of those micro trends that might have dominated for the past few seasons, we fill the holes with others that we can't wait to try for the coming ones.

As a general sentiment, the fashion set has been veering more towards the classics, the practical, and the easy—while still remaining chicer than ever. We are trading our purple pastels for shades of army green, ditching the logo mania in favour of more streamlined tones, and cosying up with textures of shearling [2] rather than colder materials like PVC and patent.

Ahead, find 6 trends we can't wait to ditch and 6 we're stocking up on in their stead.

What to ditch: Dad sneakers

Trade out those overly chunky dad sneakers that have been oh-so-popular for years past.

Go for: Sleeker kicks

Instead, opt for retro-styled sneakers that are just a little sleeker. Even if brightly coloured and 1990s-inspired, we're definitely ready to reach for a more understated sole.

What to ditch: PVC

The futuristic trend certainly had it's moment in the sun, but it's time to go for accessories that bring a little more warmth.

Go for: shearling

Shearling bags (quite literally) will bring that warmth to your 2020 wardrobe—no matter what the handbag shape—with an added texture that will bring every look to the next level.

What to ditch: bold logos

With the influx of all things '90, the fashion set has spent a few years covering everything from bags to coats in the most bold logos imaginable.

Go for: Classic colours and clean lines

This year, we're ditching the logomania and, instead, opting for classic colours, clean lines, and timeless

What to ditch: Micro-mini bags

While mini bags certainly had their moment to shine, they're decidedly less practical than the alternative.

Go for: Oversized structured totes

Though oversized bags might feel a little more casual, this year is bringing with it large carryalls of the more structured variety for an elevated take on the trend.

What to ditch: Canadian tuxedos

We love a head-to-toe denim look as much as the next style-obsessed girl, but this season, we're making it easier than a pieced-together set.

Go for: Utility jumpsuits

Keep it simple this coming year with a one-and-done that will give you the same look as a Canadian tuxedo with more ease than ever.

What to ditch: Purple

Colour has been booming for the past few seasons, but as we enter 2020, designers and street style stars alike are moving away from the Easter-egg hues into deeper tones of the Fall and Winter season.

Go for: Army green

This season, instead of a pretty pastel, opt instead for a deeper shade of army green, whether by way of a heavy coat, utility jumpsuit, or cocktail attire.
