Named after natives to the rugged, famously cold regions of Nepal and the Himalayas, the sherpa jacket lives rent-free in my mind for its more recent roles in: Brokeback Mountain, Stranger Things, Luke from Gilmore Girls (probably), and the CW's Riverdale. In fact, it's hard to put one on and not launch into Jughead's "I'm weird" monologue. Still, by virtue of being genuinely warm and all kinds of soft, the men's Western jacket is a definitive American classic when it comes to cold weather dressing.

That being said, I hadn't owned one since I was a kid, until Wrangler's Icons™ Men's Sherpa Corduroy Jacket in Tortoise Shell ($129) came around. Wrangler dubbed it "the attitude of another era meets modern design," and that checks out. Revived from the brand's "since 1947" archives, the iconic silhouette got an edit with touches from today — more-fitted sleeves, a longer body, and blink-and-you'll-miss-it branding with "W" stitching on the chest pockets, included. Together, it makes for an unsurprisingly robust, well-made jacket at a reasonable price point. It's also true to size, unlike other sherpas that tend to run a bit bigger. So, if you're between sizes, definitely size up.
