Benefits of Celery Juice

4 Things You Never Realized Celery Juice Was Good For — Like UTIs!

Celery juice is an incredibly simple drink, yet it boosts your health in so many different ways. It's great for calming inflammation, as a post-workout drink, and is even beneficial for your bones.

The taste is something to be acquired, but if people can grow to like beer and coffee, I don't see why celery juice should be any different. To me, it's really not that bad. However, if you really hate the taste, you can mix in a bit of apple juice to sweeten it up. Whether you're drinking it on it's own or adding it into a juice recipe, celery juice is here to revitalize you.

It Calms Inflammation

So many conditions are made worse by inflammation — skin disease, arthritis, urinary tract infections, and irritable bowel syndrome, to name a few.

Dr. Josh Axe, a certified nutritionist who has worked with Olympic athletes, explains on his website how "celery contains antioxidants and polysaccharides that are known to act as anti-inflammatories."

Basically, these keep you healthy as you age, "fighting free-radical damage (or oxidative stress) that can lead to inflammation," he explains.

We all know how important calcium is for building strong bones, and celery has got lots of it!

"A single serving of celery juice contains 162 milligrams of calcium, which is a little over 16 percent of the RDA (recommended dietary allowance) for adults," says nutritionist Marie Dannie on Livestrong.com.

Celery also contains high levels of vitamin K, which helps your body use calcium. Dannie describes how "a single serving of raw celery juice contains a little more than 118 micrograms of vitamin K, which is more than 100 percent of the adequate intake for men and women."

It Helps Maintain Liver Health

We can't survive without the liver — it is essential to our overall health and immune system. The liver does so many things — filtering blood, breaking down substances, storing vitamins, and processing nutrients, to name a few.

Dr. Axe describes on his site how "when researchers supplemented the high-cholesterol diets of rats with celery, chicory and barley powder, they observed an improvement in liver enzyme function and blood lipid levels."

It Prevents Urinary Tract Infections

UTIs are the worst, and I would never wish that pain on anyone. If you get them often, you might want to think about adding celery juice into your life. Celery stimulates production of urine and aids in reducing uric acid. Because of this, Dr. Axe explains how "it's beneficial for fighting bacterial infections within the digestive tract and reproductive organs."

It's a Great Post-Workout Drink

After an intense workout and lots of sweating, it's really important to stay hydrated. Celery juice is a great option for hydrating and replenishing lost electrolytes, especially potassium.

"A single serving of raw celery juice contains 1,050 grams of potassium, which is over 22 percent of the recommended dietary intake for men and women," Dannie explains on Livestrong.com.

According to Dannie, potassium "aids with the breakdown of carbohydrates, and it is essential for building muscle and proteins", along with balancing the acid-base levels in your body.
