3 Free Guided Meditations to Help You De-Stress on the Daily

02/09/2018 - 02:30 PM

I never expected to become the kind of person who meditates. Now, I meditate for 10 or 15 minutes, almost every day. I know I'm not alone; meditation has exploded in popularity [1] in the United States in recent years, and there's a pile of evidence that suggests it has a real impact on stress and anxiety [2]. Still, it can be intimidating to get started. When I first heard about the benefits of meditation years ago, the idea of sitting quietly and keeping my mind still for seconds (let alone minutes) on end sounded impossible. It turns out, I had a pretty limited view of what qualified as meditation . . . until I discovered guided meditations online.

In a guided meditation, a teacher or practitioner walks you through the meditation process, which makes getting started far less overwhelming. These online sessions allowed me to ease into meditation privately, without the (probably misguided) fear of being judged for "doing it wrong," and on my own schedule and at my own pace. Along my own meditation journey, I discovered that the internet is home to a wealth of completely free sessions led by qualified meditation teachers. I've rounded up some of my favourite free guided meditations below, all of which have something to offer whether you're a total newcomer or already have a solid meditation practice in place.

UCLA's Mindfulness Awareness Research Centre

The UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Centre's [3] guided meditations were the first I ever tried — and I still find myself going back to them time and time again.

These simple meditations, led by a calming female voice, are ideal for those who are just starting to test the mindfulness waters. Sessions span from three to 12 minutes long, and they're available in both English and Spanish.

My favourite of the bunch is the 9-minute "Loving Kindness Meditation." It's an uplifting experience any time, but it's especially welcome when you're dealing with any kind of work or personal conflict — or beating yourself up over something.

Meditation Studio

The Meditation Studio app [4] has a 4.8 rating on the Apple App Store, and it's easy to discover why. Sure, the design is snazzy and intuitive, but this app has the mindfulness goods.

While you can upgrade to a paid version of the tool for $7.99, the 12 meditations available in the Meditation Studio's free "Discover" section are basically a complimentary meditation sampler platter. Looking for a meditation to deeply relax before going to sleep? That's free. Need a meditation to kick-start your morning? That's free. What about a meditation on learning to forgive? That's also free. A meditation that helps you focus on your strengths? That's free, too.

With sessions that focus on breath, visualization, and body work, and meditations ranging from five minutes to 40, the free offerings on Meditation Studio rival the paid options on many other meditation apps.

The Chopra Centre's Guided Meditations

The Chopra Centre's free guided meditations [5] are a great option for practical people who know what they want to get out of their meditation practice — even if they don't know how to go about it quite yet.

The offerings from author and alternative medicine practitioner Deepak Chopra's institute include meditations on awakening your creativity, letting go of pain, and — yes — amping up your love life. Many of the Chopra Centre's meditations feature gentle chimes or chanting (which I personally like) playing in the background as a soothing male voice leads you through the experience.
