Curvy Kate's Latest Campaign Will Inspire You to Embrace All Your Curves
There's no denying the effect consuming images of supposed "perfection" can have on our own body image, whether we interact with them actively or passively. Although there's currently a movement on platforms like Instagram to show the real story behind posed images people post, branded adverts are still another story.
With lingerie ads historically representing a feminine ideal that has excluded women who don't fit into its narrow margins, Curvy Kate is joining a growing number of brands who are pushing against this damaging message. The brand has enlisted the help of Megan Jayne Crabbe, one of Instagram's most prolific body-positive warriors, to model the collection. For the shoot, Megan, who goes by bodyposipanda on Instagram, showcases the lingerie styles in various "posed" and "real" shots.
The side by side comparisons highlight how we should love and appreciate our bodies at all times, because as Megan says, "When it comes to pictures of models (especially lingerie models!), all we ever see are posed, polished, professional shots. The angles are always the most flattering, the hair and makeup is always supernaturally perfect, the lighting and camera quality are nothing like real life. And yet we still compare our behind the scenes to their highlight reel. We forget how staged the images often are and how much effort, time, and manipulation goes into each frame."
As an eating disorder survivor, Megan's starring role in the shoot is not only encouraging women who feel they're outside the projected ideal to embrace their beautiful bodies, but is also sending a message that there can be life after an eating disorder.
