6 Foods to Avoid While You're on Your Period

17/06/2018 - 12:00 PM

Being on your period already sucks, and unfortunately, what you put in your body during that time of the month can have a major impact on your PMS symptoms. Though you'll want to ditch your usual diet for unhealthy choices around your cycle, you may be exasperating your bloating, mood swings, digestive issues [1], fatigue, etc. as a result. To make your period a little more tolerable, try skipping the following items.

Caffeinated Drinks

Grabbing a second or third cup of coffee may sound like a great idea — especially since many women experience fatigue around their period — but it could do more harm than good. On top of contributing to any bloating, caffeine will only disrupt your sleep cycle and make you more tired the next day.

According to Dr. Kate White, MD, MPH, and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, getting enough sleep is even more crucial during this time of the month. It can help improve mental clarity and mood and help offset any lethargy you may be experiencing.

High-Sugar Foods

The reason you're likely craving sweets in the first place is thanks to hormonal changes. Mood swings and unstable blood sugar levels make you want to reach for comfort food, which only ends up making you feel worse.

Salty or Fried Foods

A plate of fries probably sounds like exactly what you need, but you could be making your mood swings worse by indulging. Not only that, but adding fried food into your diet around this time also won't improve digestive issues if you're someone who typically experiences bloating and unusual bowel movements during your period. Especially since fried foods are also often salty, you'll only retain more water.

Dairy Products

Dairy is one of the biggest culprits of bloating in general, but especially when you're on your period. To top it off, it may also even exacerbate your menstrual cramps [3].

High-Fat Foods

Hormonal changes during your period can be influenced by a high-fat diet [4]. To keep bloating in check, limit foods like burgers and other fatty meats, in addition to whole-milk products.

Alcohol

Sorry, but that glass of wine will only amplify bloating and inflammation. It may also affect your quality of sleep, so try opting for water during this time instead.
