Here's Exactly How Mercury Retrograde Is Affecting Your Health and Fitness

21/04/2018 - 12:45 PM

Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system [1], but don't let its size fool you. In the world of astrology [2], Mercury rules all things communication, and when it goes into retrograde, sh*t can get a little crazy. Mercury retrograde is a period of time in which the planet Mercury appears to be going in reverse, and as a result your world may begin to feel like its in upheaval. If you've shown up to a workout class as the wrong time, slept through a session with your trainer, and forgotten your sports bra and sneakers at home, Mercury retrograde could be to blame. POPSUGAR spoke with astrologer Kathryn Diaz [3] to find out her best tips for maintaining good health during periods of retrograde.

Stick With What You Know

Starting new things isn't advised during Mercury retrograde. Instead Diaz recommends revisiting your favourite recipes [4], self-care regimens [5], and fitness routines that have worked for you in the past. If you haven't been to your favourite yoga studio in a while, now is the perfect time to get back into your practice [6].

Avoid Taking on New Memberships

If you've been eyeballing a new fitness studio, Diaz advises holding off on signing any memberships. The last thing you want is to deal with hidden contract fees or a make a commitment that won't benefit you in the long run. For the time being, test out workout classes and revisit potential contracts when Mercury is no longer in retrograde.

Give Yourself Extra Time Before Activities

If you've been planning a weekend hike with your friends, be sure to double check the place and time as miscommunication is high while the planet is napping. Diaz also suggests giving yourself more time when it comes to transportation as traffic delays and car accidents are common. If you've been finding it difficult to wake up for your morning workouts, set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than you would typically wake up to account for delays.

Be Flexible

Diaz shared with POPSUGAR that, during Mercury retrograde, you should remember to be flexible above all else. If your favourite Pilates class [8] gets cancelled, just remember it wasn't meant to be and move on to something else.

Focus on Your Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as your physical health, and Diaz sees Mercury retrograde as a great time for introspection. She recommends spending more time meditating [9] and reflecting on what's important to you and where you're focusing your energy during times of retrograde.

We're currently in the first retrograde of the year and will experience Mercury Retrograde two more times throughout 2018. Be sure to mark your calendar with the following dates:
