This Is My Secret Recipe for the Healthy, Delicious Matcha Latte I Drink Every Day

06/08/2019 - 03:20 PM

I gave up coffee [1] almost four years ago, and at first, I didn't know how I was going to function. I think I drank 10 cups of green tea those first few days. Shortly after, though, I discovered matcha [2], and my whole world changed. Matcha is a highly concentrated green tea [3] that has around the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee, but it doesn't make me feel jittery in the way that coffee does. I was buying matcha lattes every morning, but it was taking a toll on my bank account, so I learned how to make it myself! This is everything I do to make a healthy, filling, delicious vanilla matcha latte at home. Spoiler: I buy all my ingredients on Amazon.

I start with the base. For me, I don't like it to be too milky, so I do four ounces of water and four ounces of unsweetened almond milk. But, I do still like a little bit of sweetness, so my secret ingredient is two tablespoons of vanilla protein powder. I take those four ingredients, plus four ice cubes, and blend it up. In a separate bowl, I take two ounces of hot water and add half a teaspoon of matcha. Then, I whisk it until it's frothy and smooth, for about 30 seconds. I simply pour the matcha over my base and even more ice, stir it up, and drink! It's my favourite morning ritual because it keeps me awake, focussed, and able to power through my day. I sip on it all morning long, and you will too.

Goodmylk Co. Almond Milk Concentrate

This is hands down my favourite almond milk. I used to only be able to get it in California, but now you can buy Goodmylk Co. Almond Milk Concentrate [5] ($67 for 6) on Amazon! Simply add the concentrate to water, and you have fresh almond milk that can last for five days!

Iconic Protein Powder, Vanilla Bean

I like this Iconic Protein Powder, Vanilla Bean [6] ($27) because it's not too chalky.

NutriBullet 12-Piece High-Speed Blender

I use this NutriBullet 12-Piece High-Speed Blender [7] ($50, originally $60) to blend the base together because it's so easy to clean.

MatchaBar Matcha Green Tea Powder

This MatchaBar Matcha Green Tea Powder [8] ($14) is really high quality, and when it comes to matcha, taste is so important.

OXO Good Grips 3-Piece Mixing Bowl Set

I use this OXO Good Grips 3-Piece Mixing Bowl Set [9] ($25) to make the actual shot of matcha because it's effortless to pour into my base.

Willman Charaku Japanese Handheld Electric Matcha Whisk

One of my friends got me this Willman Charaku Japanese Handheld Electric Matcha Whisk [10] ($159) for my birthday, and it's a game changer. Instead of whisking myself, I just press the button, and it gets frothy in seconds.

Yihong Set of 8 Reusable Stainless Steel Metal Straws

I can't drink my matcha unless it's out of a metal straw, which is why I love these Yihong Set of 8 Reusable Stainless Steel Metal Straws [11] ($7, originally $12).
