Iskra Lawrence is a model known across the world for her body-positive activism and her raw honesty. She regularly encourages women everywhere to engage in self-care as much as they can, because a healthy woman is a beautiful woman. Iskra is adding to the body-positive conversation yet again with her latest Instagram post. It's a before-and-after, and although she is much thinner in the photo on the left from "about 10 years ago," Iskra wrote about how much happier and healthier she is today.
"I remember being proud of how skinny I looked during this shoot," she wrote about the picture on the left. "And how now people call me fat when I'm just happy to be alive and grateful for this body I call my home."
For Iskra, being comfortable in your own skin and happy with yourself is about so much more than the number on the scale or how "thin" you look. "I used to seek approval from the fashion industry and tried to be 'perfect'. I thought if I looked like 'her' (an unrealistic beauty ideal), I'd be happy, successful and loved," she wrote. "All I found was failure (because you can't change who you are)."
She shared that she used to put herself through harmful diets and excessive exercise in an attempt to fit in and please others. But she soon realised that life is so much better when you truly take care of yourself, rather than trying to meet any ideal beauty standards.
"The best thing I ever did was focus on looking after myself and being the best me I could be," she shared. "Seeing value in who I was. The impact I could have in the world and people around me. Trying to give, instead of focusing on myself, my image and needing approval from others."
Iskra also shared that her dream has been to "get self-care (mental, emotional and physical wellness) education into schools." She also "wanted to create something for adults that still needed a safe space that's judgement free to go on a positive journey of self love." That's why she created the wellness Instagram account called everyBODYwithiskra, and it's already got 81,000 followers!
She's certainly one of our favourite body-positive activists, and we can't wait to see what other work she has up her sleeve. Because the more women out there who can find peace and happiness in their own skin like Iskra did, the better this world will be!
