Russia's Figure Skating Approach: Ice-Cold Precision, Grace, and a Bit of The Hunger Games

14/02/2018 - 08:45 PM

Team OAR's figure skating pair Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are coming into the pairs short program finals [1] at Pyeongchang 2018 with beauty and grace — and a second-place standing, less than one point behind gold-favored China [2]. With a gorgeous and impeccably sophisticated routine set to Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninoff, they're dripping in class and elegance . . . and giving the Chinese team [3] a serious run for their money.

Quick refresher on Team OAR: Russia was banned from the Olympics [4], but OAR comprises "clean," aka nondoped, athletes from Russia [5] who are not competing on behalf of their country but rather their team. TL;DR: OAR is Russia (without the flags).

While Tarasova and Morozov's synchronous precision and style are unquestioned (and basically the opposite of France's steamy, sensual approach [6]), some fans are picking up Hunger Games vibes from their edgy costumes. We're here for it.
