It's official — for now at least. After these Olympic Games, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will retire [1] from competitive skating, leaving a trail of crushed hearts in their wake. We can hardly blame them. They've been skating competitively for 20 years [2], and when they exit the ice for the last time at the Olympic figure skating gala, they will do so as the most decorated figure skaters in history [3].

It seems only fitting, then, that the couple the world has fallen in love with for their unparalleled display of emotion [4], chose a deeply personal performance as their last skate. It is also a bit of a love letter to Canada. Virtue and Moir will be skating to "Long Time Running" by The Tragically Hip [5], one of the most popular and successful bands to come from the country. The couple debuted the routine in 2017, shortly after Tragically Hip's lead singer Gord Downie passed away from brain cancer.

"When I think about Gord and I think about the Hip and what they've been able to do, it's kind of the soundtrack to being Canadian almost," Moir told The Toronto Star. "It's special for us that we get to skate to the Hip, and it's our tribute to one of my heroes and a guy who was so wonderfully weird, and just how he embraced life."

While the gala does not air until Feb. 24, we can still watch a previous performance from last year's ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating. You may want to grab a box of Kleenex before pressing play.
